Virtual Learning at KIPP DC Enrollment in the Virtual Learning Program has highlighted a need for a virtual learning option, primarily in our middle school grades. Moreover, we have received inquiries from multiple high school families expressing interest in this program. In response to the evolving landscape and the expressed needs of our families for a virtual option for Middle and High school students, we are adjusting the scope of our program. We aim to better align with the demand we are currently observing, particularly from our 5-12 families. The goal of the virtual learning program at KIPP DC is to develop a desire and love for learning in students in our virtual program. Staff members give students in our program personalized experience, seeking to know a child, their family, their strengths, and their areas for growth, in a fully virtual space. The virtual program strives to provide students with an intensive foundation in the core academic subjects through core content instruction, enrichment classes, and Personalized Learning Programs. Teachers in our virtual classrooms use KIPP DC curriculum, modified as necessary, to support students in their learning. Virtual staff cultivate a strong sense of belonging and a strong relationship with their virtual classroom of students and families. Through powerful learning experiences and relationships, our virtual learning program will drive student learning in English Language Arts, math, science, social studies, special education, and enrichment options. In core subjects, 5nd-8th grade teachers implement research-based curricula that are Common Core aligned and student centered. KIPP DC curricula is added to and revised by a committee of teachers and leaders focusing on culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy. Our teachers are experts not only in their content area(s), but also in virtual instruction. Through planning time, content meetings, and daily student work/data analysis, virtual teachers work collaboratively with peers in the virtual school program and across our network. Staff receive feedback and support from a school leader, network content coaches, and other teammates. School culture at the virtual program is grounded in Positive Behavior Incentives Systems (PBIS) led by the Manager of Student Success. Student identity and creativity is recognized through weekly celebrations. Key Requirements & Responsibilities Lead instruction and learning Teach 5th-8th grade enrichment classes Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DC’s mission and to advancing its antiracist ambition through their work with staff, students, alumni, and families Subscribe to the Vision for Teaching Excellence and commit/contribute to constant professional growth and development Provide timely and meaningful evaluation/correction of student work and student questions (quick return is critical in the online setting) Maintain positive supervision and an orderly online classroom. Implement the program-wide and classroom management policies and practices Show initiative in generating ideas and solutions; solve problems and achieve results beyond what is expected Teach enrichment classes (music, art, coding etc) to all students grades 5-8 based Plan all enrichment coursework and quarterly enrichment events (Art show, Science fair, etc.) Plan for instruction based on virtual content and student work Collaborate with other Virtual Teachers, KIPP DC coaches, and the Director of the VLP to analyze data, group students, teach, and assign interventions Teach 5th-8th grade ELA and math intervention classes daily to support all students in the VLP Prepare intellectually by analyzing student work, anticipating challenges in the lesson, proactively planning for those challenges in order to ensure that ALL students are getting excellent instruction tailored to their needs Analyze and respond to student work to create opportunities to respond to student misconceptions Determine how students spend instructional time within a fixed rotation schedule (i.e., personalized learning, large and small group instruction, individual check-ins), utilizing every minute as learning time. Utilize assessments that accurately measure student progress Analyze data from personalized learning platforms to assign students aligned lessons to their needs and plan small group instruction Invest students in their learning using a variety of techniques Build trusting relationships with staff, ALL students, and families Act as grade-level advisor and be the connection between the school and family: communicate with their students and parents, keeping them informed of students’ progress. Identify and address individual students’ social, emotional, behavioral, and academic learning needs and barriers Identify and address individual students’ development of organizational and time-management skills Build a classroom culture that empowers students, affirms their identities, and creates a sense of belonging for all students Respond to student and family phone calls as soon as possible Be available for virtual program every day KIPP DC virtual learning program teachers are on duty and available online Monday through Friday from 7:30-4:00 (M, W, F) or 5:00 (T, R) pm. Perform advisory and closing circle, analyze student work and data daily, and facilitate whole group, small group, and individualized work time for 5 instructional blocks out of the day Attend weekly team meetings, professional development sessions, and check-ins with leader Display an incredible work ethic and a passion for being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture Substituting for lead teachers as necessary Pass all required background check requirements under the School Safety Omnibus Amendment Act of 2018 Additional responsibilities may arise during the school year This could include but not limited to: attending staff and student field trips, open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and other events involving parents and students as needed. They will be communicated to all employees with as much notice and flexibility as possible. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (Required) Bachelor’s degree in content area (Preferred) At least two years of teaching experience in a public school (Required) At least one year of teaching virtually (Required) Experience teaching content area (Preferred) Proven ability to lead virtual instruction, including driving student outcomes Commitment to working with students from communities with limited access to quality educational opportunities Must maintain a professional virtual work environment, free of distraction Must have access to stable, high speed internet Must live within the continental United States and maintain east coast hours Compensation & Benefits: When it comes to compensation, at KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. We look at compensation benchmarks in schools across DC. Virtual teacher salaries are exempt and start at $60,260 and increase with years of experience. KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical. KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years. Currently, individuals in this role have up to 10 paid sick days, 12 paid holidays, paid Thanksgiving week break, winter break, spring break, and summer break. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter. All employees who use public transit through WMATA are eligible for pre-tax deductions for transportation costs. Teachers are provided with a laptop computer for work. Teachers have access to KIPP DC’s additional development and enrichment opportunities such as Special Education Fellowship, School Culture Champion Grants, Classroom Innovation Grants, and various fellowship and pilot programs launched each year This position is permanently remote , meaning there is not a requirement to be in-person on a regular basis. VLP staff members may be asked to join a retreat or team gathering a few times throughout the year, and travel may be required for these meetings.
