Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking 2 Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) Members to contribute to a variety of historic preservation projects alongside Tumacácori National Historical Park maintenance staff. Start Date: 03/6/2023-4/3/2023 Estimated End Date: 9/2/2023 (or 26 weeks after start date) *a 26-week minimum commitment is required * Location Details/Description: Just 20 miles north of the southern border, Tumacácori sits at a cultural crossroads in the Santa Cruz River valley. Here O'odham, Yaqui, and Apache people met and mingled with European Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries, settlers, and soldiers, sometimes in conflict and sometimes in cooperation. Follow the timeworn paths and discover stories that connect us to enduring relationships, vibrant cultures, and traditions of long ago. The closest towns for amenities are Rio Rico, AZ (10 miles) and Green Valley, AZ (22 miles), and Nogales (20 miles). Nogales has medical facilities (hospital and urgent care), multiple grocery options (Walmart, Safeway and other smaller stores), Home Depot, a movie theater, vehicle services, and more. For more information about Tumacácori National Historical Park please visit https://www.nps.gov/tuma/index.htm Position Overview: Members will gain insight into the basic principles of historic preservation and learn the methods of assessing and documenting the overall integrity and conditions of the historic structures and ruins. Members will work alongside and under the direction of highly skilled and seasoned adobe masons, architectural conservators, and preservationists to get hands-on experience in making adobes and applying soil and lime stucco to preserve fragile earthen architecture. These TTAP members will get unparalleled first-hand access to the knowledge and experience of professional NPS stewards at Tumacácori and develop the skill set and discipline needed to succeed in the real world after the internship. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups. Schedule: 5/4/9 schedule. 6am-3:30pm Monday-Friday, with every other Friday off. May start days earlier in the summer months. Position Benefits Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $720/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Park housing may be provided for ACE Members located outside of the commuting area or for whom commuting is impractical. Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include OSHA Certification and Historic Preservation Fundamentals courses. Qualifications Required: Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required byU.S. government contracts Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group. A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring) Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check. Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term. ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation. Preferred: Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a high school diploma and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as construction trades, use of hand and power tools. Knowledge of one or more trade practices, such as masonry, carpentry, roofing, mechanics, and/or painting. Familiarity with construction and craftsmanship. Basic familiarity with common factors in deterioration of buildings and structures. Ability and willingness to use and care for common hand tools and portable or stationary power tools associated with the trade (e.g., hammers, saws, drills, planers, etc.) Deep interest in preserving history. A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation. Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions: Physical Demands : Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain. Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus. Weight Lifted or Force Exerted : ability to move and/or lift up to 50 pounds. Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in temperatures ranging from 30 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Noise Environment : Moderate to high noise such gas-powered chainsaws and other hand and power tools. Environmental Conditions/Hazards: Th e ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources. Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS , will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
