The main responsibility of the Coordinator is to spearhead outreach activities for soil carbon monitoring within specific USDA-NRCS conservation programs.The Coordinator will work as part of a team delivering outreach and training services. The Coordinator will train Qualified Individuals (QIs) to work as intermediaries between producers enrolled in climate-smart conservation programs with the USDA-NRCS, for monitoring and assessing land-use change effects on soil organic carbon storage. The Coordinator will have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful conservation and climate adaptation work throughout the entire western region of the US.The Coordinator will work as part of an interdisciplinary team, collaborating with conservation managers at the national, regional, and state levels. Our team is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Coordinator will oversee outreach and training activities, including: 1 Engaging stakeholders- providing information on "climate-smart" agricultural practices and how adoption of conservation practices can be used to mitigate climate change (for example, see https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/conservation-basics/natural-resource-concerns/climate/climate-smart-mitigation-activities); and 2 Capacity building - training a diverse array of Qualified Individuals to facilitate the implementation, monitoring, and assessment of agricultural conservation practices within a specific conservation evaluation and management activity (CEMA 221) (for example, see https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs-initiatives/eqip-environmental-quality-incentives/eqip-cpas-dias-and-cemas).Department Overview:The position is based in the Department of Geosciences (https://www.boisestate.edu/geos/), which is within the College of Arts and Sciences, and connected to the School of the Environment (https://www.boisestate.edu/environment/) at Boise State University. This position will interact with a dynamic community of faculty, researchers, and students committed to trans-disciplinary, team-based, actionable science that addresses real-world environmental challenges. Works independently with general supervision. Exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance, assistance, and training to entry-level professionals, support employees, and studentsEssential Functions:Specifically, the Coordinator will: 1 Gain a deep understanding of the knowledge and tools being developed and the conservation and sustainability issues that the project addresses, by interacting with the project team, other regional projects, Federal NRCS project support personnel, and reading scientific papers and other published literature. 2 Ensure that the project's work is informed by on-the-ground land management practices and perspectives by directly engaging with diverse agricultural stakeholders, via workshops, webinars, and 1-on-1 conversations and conveying those learnings to the broader team and community. 3 Design creative and diverse science communication products (e.g., training and workshop content, digital services, published materials) that effectively communicate the conservation evaluation and management activities of CEMA 221 to relevant stakeholders and project outreach partners. 4 Coordinate the outreach and training activities among the team and stakeholder groups in collaboration with a part-time project manager. 5 Take a lead role in planning, organizing and implementing events that facilitate engagement with the teams and the stakeholder groups. 6 Respond to project-related questions and requests by stakeholders engaged in agricultural land management. 7 Provide mentorship to junior staff and students working on the team. 8 Provide support for budgets, management, and logistics for the team outreach activities with the part-time project manager.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:The candidate will also meet the following qualifications: * Working knowledge of scientific principles, research design, and research protocols, including: * Analysis and collection of samples * Quantitative and qualitative social science methods * Ability to work both independently and as part of a team * Willingness to travel overnight 6-10 weeks per year for work when spearheading workshops, trainings, and outreach activities. Travel may or may not be consecutive. Additional day trips will also be required. * Ability to perform field or laboratory work, as applicable to the position. Does not require pre-existing knowledge of soils procedures, although helpful. * Ability to learn new skills with an appropriate amount of training * Ability to develop working relationships with research and outreach partners and vendors * Experience with conducting outreach and stakeholder engagement, ideally in agricultureMinimum Qualifications:Requires a minimum of Master's or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline, or Bachelor's or equivalent degree, plus at least 2 years of post-bachelor's work experience in a role that is similar to that of a Research Assistant.Requires one of the following degrees/experience in a relevant discipline: * Masters Degree * Bachelors Degree plus at least 2 years of post-bachelors work in a research-related role. Relevant Disciplines include: Ag-related degrees, Biological Sciences, Crop Sciences, Soil Science, Geological Sciences, Environmental or Natural Resource Science, Environmental Policy, Human Environmental Systems, Natural Resources Management, Natural Resource or Community Sociology with an emphasis on stakeholder engagement, Rural Studies.A valid drivers license is required.Preferred Qualifications:Competitive candidates will have either a) a PhD, or b) an MS with >2 years of applied science and/or stakeholder engagement experience, in topics related to agricultural sustainability.We are seeking a candidate with a strong foundation in applied environmental science and/or environmental or agricultural social science, excellent science communications skills (particularly oral presentation), and a strong desire to use their skills to influence on-the-ground environmental management decisions towards sustainable land use practices. This position would also be a good fit for an experienced science communication/outreach professional who desires to work in a dynamic, flexible environment that encourages creativity and pursuing new ideas.Salary and Benefits:The salary for this position is $64,875.20 + full benefits. This is a 4-year project, with contract renewal each year following satisfactory performance evaluation.
