STScI is looking for a Software Manager to provide leadership, supervision, technical direction, and mentorship of a complementary team of software engineers, database engineers and astronomers. The Scientific Managing team is leading the development of novel data management platforms (based on JupyterHub) to support the science of the astronomy community and migrating legacy data pipelines and analytics workloads to the public cloud. You will work with a team that is passionate about the work they do in support of astronomers around the world.Roles & Responsibilities Evolve platforms to meet future data needs of the astronomical community Translate scientific needs into software requirements Manage software engineers working in an agile environment Provide project management including coordination, detail planning, and direction Provide functional management including recruitment, mentoring, and training Establish goals and track expected results to closure Develop, maintain and support continuous improvement activities Coordinate with other groups both within and outside STScIQualifications & Job Requirements:You have a BS/BA in Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, or a related scientific or technical field. 10+ years of progressive technical, management and leadership experience including team leadership Demonstrated Cloud software architecture and software development expertise Demonstrated very effective communication skills Demonstrated experience managing staff developing and supporting a large complex system Software engineering experience including agile techniques Solid understanding and history of promoting automated testing Good working knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git, etc. Experience with data models and web APIs Demonstrated project management experience US citizen or Permanent Resident to meet ITAR requirementsHelpful skills: Familiarity with Web Services (RESTful APIs, SOAP etc.) Experience with large data sets and databases Experience with complex, JavaScript-based visualizations Experience of working to accessibility and security compliance standards Experience working within an environment that supports a science community Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) Experience of designing high-availability web applications Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Experience with Jupyter NotebooksAURA, as a leader in the astronomical community, is committed to diversity and inclusion.
