SUMMARY The Exploratorium seeks a seasoned grants professional, with exceptional leadership, writing and project management skills. The Senior Grants Manager is responsible for four main strands of work: 1) researching, developing, writing, and editing competitive proposals to foundations and government agencies for Exploratorium programs; 2) working with senior program staff to craft new projects, programs and initiatives capable of garnering significant funding, as well as clarifying grant needs and opportunities within the museum; 3) cultivating and stewarding relationships with institutional funders; and 4) leading grant fundraising strategies for individual projects with budgets of $1 million or more. This individual will also be responsible for identifying new funding prospects. The position requires excellent leadership and writing skills; the ability to represent complex projects in science, art, education, and media to external stakeholders and potential funders; proposal and grant budgeting expertise; the ability to work closely with a wide range of staff, and to work independently. The work is fast paced with frequent deadlines. The Senior Grants Manager will be part of a three-person grants team responsible for enacting a multi-year grants fundraising strategy. This position is expected to manage a grants portfolio of approximately 4 - 5 government prospects and 40 - 60 foundation prospects. This position reports to the Director of Grants. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Leadership of proposal development processes for large government grants that include multiple stakeholders. Lead complex funding strategies, often involving executive leadership. Negotiate grant scopes of work and budgets with internal stakeholders and funders as needed. Work closely with program staff to lead and develop grant projects, proposals, budgets, and reports. Write, rewrite, edit, format, and/or proofread proposals and reports. Maintain detailed knowledge of a broad range of programs throughout the museum. Maintain current knowledge of government and foundation funding sources and policies governing institutional giving. Clarify grant needs and opportunities within the museum. Undertake additional writing and budget duties as required. Represent the institution to external funders at stewardship events, meetings, and through written materials. Contribute to mentoring emerging content leaders from across the institution on grant proposal development. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BA/BS degree and 7 - 12 years of experience as a lead grant writer or grants manager, preferably in a complex, multifaceted, nonprofit educational environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience Ability to facilitate conversations with internal and external stakeholders at the highest level of the organization Ability to independently lead and facilitate grant writing teams of experts and non-experts to produce winning proposals, proactively identifying issues, brainstorming solutions, and keeping diverse teams on track and on deadline. Ability to independently write, edit and proofread highly complex academic style grants, doing requisite research, field assessments, and subject matter interviews as necessary to produce proposal submissions of exceptional quality. Demonstrated track record of handling a variety of constituencies, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and thriving in a complex environment with multiple priorities Exceptional written and verbal communication skills Strong project management skills Strong proposal budgeting skills Demonstrated success developing and writing grant proposals for government agencies and large national private foundations Other duties as assigned.
