A Day in the Life of a Senior Engineer You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects. If you are on the civil design track , you'll lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You use programs such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation in order to fulfill production work on your projects. You will manage projects; guide your team and clients through concept development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and construction management. You will help develop construction documents; and work with your team to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality. If you're on the transportation design track, you'll help lead the creation of signing and pavement marking plans, maintenance of traffic, and traffic signal plans for roadway projects and streetscapes in urban settings. You will use programs such as Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, MicroStation, and AutoCAD to fulfill production work on your projects. You'll use state of the art tools and practices to help create sustainable multimodal transportation networks. You'll also have the opportunity to work on a wide spectrum of projects that inform your design work, including road diet analyses, multimodal traffic studies for new development, roundabout studies, trail/roadway intersection studies and designs, and parking studies and design guidance. You will be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, delivering project ideas from concept to construction. You share your knowledge on stakeholder and public outreach, developing feasibility studies and concept plans and preparing construction documents for innovative projects throughout the country. You participate in business development pursuits in your home region as well as across our Midwestern and North American offices. Qualifications of a Senior Engineer: Bachelor's or Master's degree in civil engineering Professional Engineering license in Minnesota (or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire) 10+ years of experience 3+ years of experience in project or design management Experience managing and/or overseeing work of junior staff A broad knowledge base in civil engineering Understanding of basic geometric design principles of transportation facilities and industry transportation facility design standards Proficiency in one or more of the following: MicroStation (including OpenRoads), AutoCAD (including Civil 3D) Experience coordinating utility, right-of-way, street lighting, traffic signals, and landscape and hardscape layout Experience developing construction documents and cost estimates Interest in multimodal and active transportation design Excellent technical writing is preferred It would be a plus if you had some of the following: Professional Engineering license(s) in other Midwestern states (IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, and/or WI) or the ability to obtain Exposure to construction management Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure Experience using stormwater design software such as HydroCAD or HydroFlow Traffic engineering and Signal design experience Specific knowledge of advanced multimodal roadway design and NACTO guidance Understanding of MUTCD standards at the state and federal level Experience working on transit projects Experience with bicycle, pedestrian, transit, and Safe Routes to School issues for all ages and abilities Experience in Complete Streets, bikeway, and crossing design Experience preparing transportation and local agency permit documents Experience developing conceptual designs for intersections and corridors Experience with operational analysis Experience working on preliminary and/or final design engineering projects for major existing and potential clients in our market area, such as MnDOT, Twin Cities area counties, Twin Cities metro area core and first ring suburban cities, Greater Minnesota regional center municipalities, and similar agencies in neighboring states Experience developing proposals, fee estimates, and proposal interview materials You'll be great here if: You have strong leadership skills and enjoy participating in multi-disciplinary teams You are passionate about sustainability and the opportunity to work on challenging multimodal projects that make communities more livable You enjoy producing high-quality work products and seeing your projects get built You have strong communication skills, whether written, verbal, or graphical You can build relationships, bring enthusiasm to exciting projects, and are detail oriented with strong problem-solving skills You have strong relationships working with other consultant teams as a prime or sub consultant Work Schedule for a Senior Engineer This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week. About our Minneapolis Office Toole Design's Minneapolis office is conveniently located downtown at 212 3rd Avenue N, near to the Mississippi River and Cedar Lake bike trail systems and walking distance from Metro Blue, Green, Orange, and C line Stations. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit. Located in the North Loop neighborhood in the historic Colonial Warehouse building, the office is inside the former headquarters of the city's streetcar company. Our windows overlook the Cedar Lake Trail which most of our staff use to bike to work each day, sometimes with a canine in tow (our building is dog-friendly). You will also find Minneapolis staff conducting "walking meetings" to the nearby Mississippi River, taking transit nearly anywhere in the region, or hopping on bike share to attend meetings.
