The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year. The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of it's citizens. Job Purpose This position is designed specifically for a veterinary student or veterinary technician student. The student will work under the direction of Willowbrook's clinic staff to assist in providing professional medical services to injured wildlife of DuPage County. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide routine and emergency care to a variety of species of wildlife (avian, mammal, reptile, and amphibian) and administer appropriate treatment Assist with medical, diagnostic, and surgical procedures Assist with euthanasia and postmortem examinations as needed Monitor the health of patients, complete medical and procedural records Assist in checking on maturity, development, and recovery of animals Perform other duties as required Scheduled Hours: 40 hours a week for 12 weeks, starting Mid-May, includes holidays and at least 1 weekend day per wee k Starting Pay: $13.00 per hour Scrub tops provided for duration of position, responsible for scrub bottoms/workwear pants and sturdy work shoes (preferably hiking boots or something similar). Education and Experience Required Additional Information: Must be 18 years of age or older at time of hire. Related Experience: Background or familiarity with wildlife rehabilitation philosophy. Special training or other license, certification, etc.: Current enrollment with completion of the first year (1) of degree in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program from an accredited institution or current enrollment with completion of the first year (1) in degree in Veterinary Technician Program (CVT) from an accredited institution. Must have a valid Driver's License; Must have current rabies vaccination. Skills in: Observing, safe handling, restraint, and transportation of a variety of wildlife (experience is encouraged but not required); prioritizing and managing multiple tasks; working independently, making sound decisions quickly; working closely and communicating effectively with others.
