Position: School Counselor This new position is a full-time, salaried, administrative position that reports to the Head of School, serves on the leadership team of the school, and convenes the school's student support team. The School Counselor will provide leadership, vision, and direction for the development and implementation of a comprehensive counseling and wellness plan to promote equity, access, and the social-emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of Bethany School students and the adults who support them. The School Counselor will be instrumental in creating a positive school culture by helping all students apply academic achievement, social-emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills and strategies. Roles and Responsibilities: ● Participate in strategic academic planning, including the implementation of social-emotional learning approaches and differentiation strategies ● Coordinate new student orientation, general academic advising, and high school selection processes ● Interpret cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests and support faculty and family members in communicating the significance of the data ● Provide counseling to students who are tardy or absent, have disciplinary problems, or may be experiencing other difficulties or hardship ● Conduct short-term individual and small-group counseling services to students ● Consult and collaborate with teachers to schedule and present school counseling curriculum lessons based on developmental needs and needs identified through data ● Interpret student records for admissions and academic support purposes ● Analyze student performance and achievement and work with the student support team to offer strategies and interventions ● Build classroom connections and effective classroom management in collaboration with teachers and examine the role of non-cognitive factors in student success ● Protect student records and information per state and federal confidentiality regulations ● Contribute to the school leadership team's identification of and resolutions to student issues, needs, and problems ● Advocate on behalf of students in individual learning plan meetings and student study team meetings while considering the school's capacity to support students ● Conduct individual student academic planning and goal setting ● Provide referrals for long-term support in collaboration with families/teachers/administrators/community for student success ● Educate faculty and family members on the developmental characteristics and benchmarks of children in grades K-8 ● Act as a systems change agent to improve equity and access, achievement, and opportunities for all students ● Uphold and promote the mission, vision, and values of the school Qualities and Qualifications ● Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion ● Proactive, creative, ethical systems thinker and decision-maker ● Positive, collaborative colleague with active listening skills, a sense of humor, and genuine humility ● High level of integrity and ability to maintain the confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information ● Love of children in grades K-8 and a willingness to participate fully in the life of the School ● Advanced communication, organization, and presentation skills ● Proficient knowledge of computer software and systems needed to work most efficiently, e.g. Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Rediker, etc. ● 4-year degree in counseling, psychology or other education related area (required) ● Advanced degree/licensure/certification in counseling or psychology (preferred) ● Fulfill continuing education requirements (required) ● 5+ years experience as a counselor (preferred) ● School counseling experience/independent school experience (preferred) ● Uphold American School Counselors' Association ethics and professional standards Compensation and Benefits: Salary commensurate with experience. Salary Range: 50-60K. Comprehensive and competitive benefits package, including optional medical and dental plans; non-contributory life and disability insurance; 403(b) plan.
