Additional Information About the Role 2nd Year Resident Chaplain Overview Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.The Spiritual Care Services department is made up of four service lines: Chaplaincy, Chaplaincy Education, Palliative Care Consult Services and Ethics Committee support. Each of these service lines participates within the healthcare interdisciplinary teams at Barnes-Jewish Hospital with the goal of healing body, mind and spirit. Department personnel are comprised of Board Certified Professional Chaplains, Chaplain Director, ACPE Chaplain Supervisor, Chaplain Manager, Chaplain Residents, Contractual Chaplains, Medical Director and physician of Palliative Care Consult Services, Palliative Care Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Administrative Assistants and medical, chaplaincy, social work, nursing students rotating through these services. Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose A Chaplain, Resident 2nd year would specialize in a clinical area, and/or in an area of spiritual care/education that would benefit the resident's professional growth and provide a project that would benefit the spiritual care department and/or the hospital staff. The specialization may be in providing in-services, preparing and presenting a year-long project, and show competence in meeting the nationally recognized collaborative standards with progress toward certification. A resident may become an expert in whatever medical/clinical area is chosen such as providing virtual follow-up care with patients/families and to coordinate ongoing support of the patient's support communities. Specialties may include intentional staff support to the clinical area and to other employees who do not have a chaplain assigned such as social workers, environmental services, cafeteria workers, etc. Other specialties may be in trauma; involvement with our health care disparities efforts and education of local clergy; ethics, etc. Responsibilities Participate in 1-3 units of the ACPE program with the option of taking one additional unit of ACPE training and, if deemed ready (with a project proposal), to move into a fellowship program for the last 2/3 of the year. Provide clinical care on assigned clinical areas; provide patient, family, and staff care. Participate in DCAM rounds. Function at Level II ACPE which has more complex expected objectives and outcomes - the student is expected to, navigating highly complex situations. Participate fully in the activities of the spiritual care department. Assist in planning the ACPE training program and provide teaching at least one per training unit.
