Research Associate/Staff Scientist, Schroeder Lab

The Schroeder lab at UT Southwestern Medical Center is recruiting a Research Associate/Staff Scientist. The lab’s members are passionate evolutionary cell biologists. We specifically study cytoskeletal genes that are rapidly evolving between closely related species and have adapted novel biological functions. We want to know what drives this genetic innovation and the biological consequences of this unexpected adaptation. Many of these proteins play important roles in fertility and development from flies to humans, and a subset is misexpressed in cancer, with expression consistently correlating with reduced survival time. The human health implications are a big motivation for studying these cytoskeletal proteins, and they are exciting models for understanding how cytoskeletal proteins evolve under selective pressure and adapt novel functions. We take an interdisciplinary approach. Our day-to-day work includes evolutionary analyses, tissue culture, microscopy, fly genetics, biochemistry, and structural biology. The position will start this summer or fall (the start date is flexible), and duties will include conducting an independent research project, performing general lab maintenance, keeping a detailed lab notebook, and participating in lab meetings, seminars, and journal clubs.Specific Qualifications:-Ph.D. degree in a relevant field.-Or, Master’s degree with major coursework in a relevant field and 3-5 years of laboratory experience.-Or, Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in a relevant field and 4-6 years of laboratory experience.Initial Application instructions: Submit the following:1.
