SUMMARY STATEMENT: The Research and Science Communication Assistant (RSCA) will work closely with small teams of peers, under mentorship from Museum staff and invited external STEM experts, to engage families in learning about current research topics as part of their museum visit. The RSCA will complete training in science research methods, science education strategies, and science communication practices. The Research and Science Communication Assistant will develop skills related to conducting research studies, including those needed to understand a research protocol, collect and analyze data, and present research findings for both public and professional audiences. They will gain practical experience through direct interaction with the public, including recruiting museum visitors to participate in studies, collecting data, and talking with families about study questions, methods and implications. The RSCA will also engage museum visitors in learning about a variety of STEM topics by facilitating small group activities for families in the exhibit halls, as well as developing and prototyping educational products such as hands-on activities, exhibit components, and visitor handouts. RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop and maintain familiarity with best practices for science research, science education, and science communication with museum audiences (1-2 hours daily). Interact directly with Museum visitors as a researcher, working closely with mentors from the Museum and its external research partners, to recruit families and to conduct research studies with children and their caregivers (1-2 hours daily). Interact directly with Museum visitors as a science educator and science communicator, with a focus on sharing the Museum's on-going research initiatives with families (2-3 hours daily). Support the day-to-day operation of the Museum by assisting with cleaning, organization, and upkeep of educational materials and exhibit venues (1-2 hours daily). Assist with data collection, analysis, and reporting for a variety of research projects, including developing novel research products. (e.g. reports, posters, presentations). Develop 3-4 educational products (e.g. visitor hand-outs, hands-on activities) per year Communicate research findings to professional audiences (e.g. other museum staff, other researchers), verbally or in writing, approximately twice per year. WORK SCHEDULE: This position is grant-funded, part-time. Summer Hours ( Early June 2023 to late June 2024): 4-5 days/week, 28 hrs/week, and either Saturdays or Sundays, 7hrs/week during the following academic year. REPORTS TO: Manager, Research & Development MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in high school Ability to read, write, understand English; basic math 6 or more months of informal science education experience Demonstrated comfort communicating STEM concepts to a variety of lay audiences verbally Demonstrated interested in psychology, child development, human behavior, or a related field of research Demonstrated interest in science education and/or science communication Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work in a group setting as part of a multi-faceted team STARTING SALARY: Non-Exempt (Hourly). $17.00 / hourly BENEFITS: Free parking in the Museum garage, T accessibility, free Exhibit Halls admission and Omni/Planetarium shows, free Duck Tours, discounts in the Museum store and cafe, discounted movie passes, retirement & savings plan.
