The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year. The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of it's citizens. Job Purpose This position is to provide clean and safe preserves for visitors, assist Ranger staff with day to day operations, to ensure effective facility operations, to provide working guidance to seasonal staff and to provide positive recreational experiences for the public. Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Provide information to the public regarding District rules & regulations, ordinance interpretation, safety guidelines, general preserve information, facilities, amenities, programs and special events.• Assist Ranger staff with day to day operations including opening preserves, permit check-ins, preserve inspections and general preserve maintenance (i.e. clean latrines, de-littering, amenity repairs, etc.).• Handle sales transactions, POS systems, end of day reports, issue rental equipment, explain facility rules and monitor preserves for safe conditions.• Maintain facilities in a sanitary and orderly condition for the public (i.e. Greene Valley scenic overlook, boat rentals, campgrounds and tube hill).• Process permits, sell firewood, maintain amenities and monitor safety of visitors all hours at the family campground.• Assist Ranger staff with various recreational programs including archery, fishing, paddling and special events.• Assist with natural resource management tasks including brush clearing, landscaping and prescription burning (upon completion of Chicago Wilderness Burn training).• Assist in the operation of District vehicles.• Perform as first responder to emergency situations.• Perform other duties as required. Starting Pay: $18.63-21.60 an hour Schedule: Less than 1000 hours per calendar year. Hours include weekends, evenings and holidays. Additional Information: Will be based out of Blackwell Forest Preserve or Churchill Woods Forest Preserve. Will need to bring own lunch for working in the field. Safety boots required, reimbursement available. Education and Experience Required Related Experience: Experience in facility operations, POS systems, customer service and general maintenance preferred. Special training or other license, certification, etc.: Driver's License. Knowledge Of: District rules and regulations; proper safety considerations; outdoor recreational programs; basic computer software. Skills In: Dealing effectively with the public; expressing oneself clearly and concisely; handling revenues and operating POS systems; interpreting rules and regulations; keeping neat and accurate records; general maintenance.
