( Video ) Puppy Parvo Vet Tech II Position Overview Are you a skilled technician who loves to nurture dogs and puppies through challenging illnesses? Does helping shelter animals fill your heart with joy? Our amazing Puppy Parvo ICU team is looking for you! Be part of a mighty team tackling one of the biggest medical challenges in the sheltering world by providing lifesaving treatments to those with parvo. Our Puppy Parvo ICU is unique to the valley as we provide ill puppies surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society and those at other shelters with a second chance. You will hold a key role in providing a healing and supportive environment by providing for both the physical and mental health of Puppy Parvo ICU patients through industry-leading complete care. You will assist the veterinarians in the treatment of the animals in the Puppy Parvo ICU which may include radiology, laboratory diagnostics, client education, clinic asepsis, fluid therapy, and the administration of prescribed medications. Essential Functions Demonstrate a strong the desire to learn from and collaborate with the Puppy Parvo ICU team. Assist in the admission of patients to the parvo ward. Administer treatment to the sick and recovering animals currently in the Puppy Parvo ICU, which may include reconstituting medications and the use of fluid and syringe pumps. Collect, prepare, and submit all lab samples to outgoing vendors. Complete any in-house laboratory testing for animals under treatment. Perform physical exams on all animals, set IV catheters on the most critical patients. Keep ICU clean and orderly. Implant microchips, administer any necessary vaccines, dewormers and flea and tick preventatives. Complete and maintain all medical records accurately. Be aware of and follow departmental procedures for euthanasia. All diagnostic results, complications, or instructions will be conveyed by the veterinarian on duty or relayed verbatim, per their instructions. Clean and sanitize the parvo ward and animal habitats according to outlined procedures and timelines, including emptying garbage, washing dishes, and laundry, daily. Feed, water, and maintain habitats in accordance with departmental and organizational standards at all times. Handle all animals humanely per our low-stress and fear-free standards in conjunction with traditional handling practices; correctly use safety equipment when necessary. Understand and adhere to all set cleaning, chemical, handling, and safety procedures. Rotate, restock, and maintain supply count in the parvo ward. Assist in training new staff members. Move animals as required, update the kennel located in the computer, and move the paperwork to the appropriate place. Follow Standards of Care items outlined. Qualifications Education / Certifications / Licenses: High school diploma/GED Completion of a veterinary technician program Experience: At least 3 years of experience as Tech II/ CVT in a veterinary clinic/hospital Must know phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology, pharmacology and perform safe and humane animal handling. Must be proficient in anesthesiology. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English. Mathematical - Basic Technical - Proficiency with or able to learn/use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment) and able to learn other software programs as necessary. Other: Regular attendance, punctuality and access to reliable transportation required. Work Environment / Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
