MISSION: The mission of the YMCA of the Foothills is to organize, develop, finance, and conduct programs for an association of persons of all ages that will, by putting Christian principles into practice, enrich the quality of their lives spiritually, mentally, physically and socially. POSITION SUMMARY: Under the guidance of the Director, Preschool, the Teacher is responsible for the management and supervision of children between the ages of 2-5. The Teacher will work effectively with students, parents, staff and volunteers. The incumbent must possess the physical ability to lead and interact in activities and games with children, monitor behavior requiring separation and participate in curriculum activities and housekeeping responsibilities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Teach lessons daily, maintaining a constant daily routine. Plan daily lessons for the newsletter. Maintain reserve activities prepared for off-season weather conditions. Assist in the planning, supervision and implementation of the daily program under the direction of the Director. Gear the program to the needs of the individual child with concern for his/her interest, handicaps, special talents, style and pace of learning. Consider the individual child in relationship to his/her cultural and socioeconomic background. Assist in planning and preparation of the creative learning environment and preparation of needed materials and supplies. Provide support and is available as a resource to other staff members in need of assistance (i.e. lesson plans, staff in-services, duty schedules, etc...). Use resources to create and prepare unique and interesting lesson plans (i.e. Library, teaching books, records, teaching workshops, etc...). Supervise children with a concern for their safety at all times. Actively engage in activities with children. Supervise and lead the activity areas and encourage the children to participate in all activities and ensure children are never left unattended under any circumstances. Assist with general housekeeping tasks and report all maintenance and/or equipment needs to supervisor. Provide adequate bathroom runs (always taking two or more children at a time). Provide a safe and clean environment for the children. Ensure that all children wash their hands prior to eating snack and/or lunch. Report any accident or safety concerns to supervisor. Complete incident reports as needed and document all accidents (no matter how minor) on an ouch report. Check I.D. of any persons not familiar that come to site during work hours. Maintain accurate attendance records on all children in the program and report all absences to the Director. Communicate regularly with the Director about issues and report any issues with staff or parents to the Director. Supervise and use aide to their fullest potential (cleaning, organizing, cutting, paints, etc...). Responsible for student and parent evaluations. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled and required. Act as representative of the YMCA of the Foothills at all times. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum 18 years of age. Must be a high school graduate or possess GED. Must have twelve (12) units completed in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) classes. Must have 2 years teaching experience working with children in an organized setting. Ability to provide leadership and direction in a preschool setting while adhering to the YMCA's Policy and Procedures at all times. Has an understanding of the developmental needs of preschool age children and possess a sincere interest and ability to work responsibly with children in a leadership capacity. CPR & FIRST AID Certifications required or within 90 days of hire. Must have clearance through fingerprinting, drug testing, criminal records and child abuse index check. Must have doctor's clearance and current TB test. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures at all times. Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents, and the physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations. Physical ability to lead and participate in active sports and games with children, monitor behavior requiring physical separation and oversee curriculum activities and perform housekeeping responsibilities.
