Day in the Life Our busy Orthopeadic practice with two locations in Oak Lawn and Orland Park, IL has an immediate need for a Physician Assistant for our Foot and Ankle. The PA-C will be utilized in both the clinic and OR, working alongside an experienced Orthopaedic surgeon. Experienced candidates are preferred but the surgeon is willing to train new graduates with a passion for orthopedics. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Inpatient Wards Participate in rounding on inpatient and documentation of medical plan. Provide routine medical management of inpatient care including ordering of diagnostic tests, labs, x-rays, medications, and nutrition, managing adjunctive care (within the scope of the Illinois Physician Assistant Practice Guidelines). Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and communication of treatment plans with orthopedic physician, nursing staff, and families. Conduct procedure/injections (under direction and appropriate level of supervision of the supervising physician and within the current scope of practice of the supervising physician) Assist orthopedic attending physicians in rendering care in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Manage discharge of patients with appropriate disposition, follow-up planning, adjunctive therapy management and education. Making assessment of emergency conditions and, in conjunction with attending physician, implement management. Surgery Prepare patients for surgery, including education, positioning, skin preparation and administration of local anesthetic, and preparation of equipment. Function as first or second assistant in the operating room including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds, application of immobilization devices and splints. Writing post-op notes and orders. Outpatient Clinic Obtain medical history and perform physical examination. Develop and implement plan of care with attending supervision. Complete appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered. Make appropriate referral for consultations. Provide pre- and post-operative patient education to patients and their families. Respond to telephone inquiries of patients and provide appropriate medical care, referral for consultation or counseling. Communicate with referring or primary care physicians regarding patient care and treatment. Provide follow-up and health maintenance care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in response to specific instructions from the Attending Physician. Prescription of medications to accomplish the plan of treatment, within the scope of the supervising physician's written delegated prescriptive authority, as defined in Article II of the Illinois Controlled Substances Act, and the Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987. Demonstrates ability to work independently. Ability to effectively communicate and work with physicians, residents, nurses, patients, families, staff, other healthcare professionals, and management. Ability to work with and maintain confidentiality of patient, patient account, and personnel data. Ability to work as a team member. Committed to advancement of physician assistant as a career. Maintenance of credentialing and licensing. Adherence to Allied Health bylaws and regulations. Seeking continuously to improve the quality of patient care. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Physician Assistant Degree (Bachelor's or Masters of Science). Completion of an accredited physician assistant program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Certification by NCCPA. Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois. Federal DEA and Illinois mid-level practitioner controlled substance license. Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Participate in department lectures and ongoing CME - earning and logging 100 hours of CME per 2-year cycle in accordance with National Commission of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) requirements. Read assignments as directed by supervising physician. Teach other providers as appropriate for level of experience. Working Conditions/Physical Demands: This position requires standing and walking for long periods of time with some sitting behind computer. Requires manual and finger dexterity and vision corrected to normal range. Lifting up to or assisting with weight up to 50lbs Travels between both locations Oak Lawn, Orland Park on clinic days and assigned surgery centers and hospitals for days in surgery.
