The Baldwin School is seeking a full-time Physical Education teacher and Department Chair to oversee all aspects of the Pre-K through Grade 12 physical education program. This individual will hold a three-quarter-time teaching load, coach, and oversee the Independent Physical Education (IPE) program for students in Grades 6-12. The Department Chair provides mentorship and leadership to department faculty members and works closely with the Wellness Team to support the holistic needs of all students. The Department Chair works closely with the Director of Athletics, the Director of Aquatics, and the Division Directors to define, articulate, and implement the School's physical education and aquatics program. Successful candidates will enjoy working collaboratively with other teachers to develop engaging lessons to meet the needs of all students. They will engage students positively, with a growth mindset, and interact productively with colleagues and parents. Successful candidates will make meaningful contributions to co-curricular programs, engage in those duties typical of independent school life, and support the school's mission. They will have an understanding of and appreciation for girls' education. Teaching Responsibilities: Collaborate with department members to create and implement innovative and engaging lessons; Organize special events for students in Pre-K through Grade 5; Oversee and align the IPE program in Grades 6-12 with institutional goals; Coach two sports; Demonstrate and deploy a deep understanding of physical education best practices and pedagogies to link this content area to PK-12 curricula, building cross-curricular connections; Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and commitment to growth for yourself and your students; Actively pursue professional development in the teaching of physical education; and Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics or Head of School. Department Chair Responsibilities: With feedback from Division Directors and the Director of Athletics, perform regular review and revision of the physical education curriculum and ensure that it is designed to meet the developmental needs of students; Create and assign the department teaching schedule; Provide leadership by modeling standards of best instructional practice; Attend Academic Council meetings with other school leaders to review curriculum, school policies, and practices and assist with strategic planning; Observe classroom teaching, provide feedback, and conduct annual evaluations in collaboration with the Director of Athletics; Plan and lead regular department meetings to review and discuss pedagogy and curriculum; Coordinate with the Director of Athletics and the Wellness Team on approaches to curriculum and programming, equipment, venues, resources, and community-wide promotion of fitness, health, and wellness. Manage the department budget, ensuring appropriate equipment for a robust physical education program; Collaborate with the Director of Athletics and other administrators to oversee the hiring and retention of physical education faculty. Required Qualifications Include: At least 7 years of experience in education and a relevant Master's degree; Teaching and leadership experience, with expertise in designing and implementing physical education programming; Deep and broad knowledge of wellness education, including aquatics and interdisciplinary education; Exceptional communication skills and a willingness to listen and lead within a highly innovative and collaborative environment; Displays resilience, focus, and flexibility when solving problems; and Creative, energetic, and positive approach to teaching; This position reports to the Director of Athletics.
