Congressional School seeks a Performing Arts, Speech and Debate Teacher for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Performing Arts, Speech, and Debate Teacher is responsible for teaching, motivating, and inspiring, our Middle School students. As a Speech Teacher, this person will present Middle School students with an appreciation for rhetoric, communication, critical thinking, argumentation and negotiation. Debate, presentation skills, negotiation, rhetorical theory, improvisation and collaboration will allow students to practice skills they will be able to apply to every other aspect of their learning. As a Performing Arts Teacher, this person will present students with an opportunity to explore the craft of acting. The Teacher will share the importance of voice and movement, acting technique, basic directing, and design, focusing on the craft of performance. The Middle School Drama Teacher will continue to grow and strengthen both dramatic arts elective class offerings and extracurricular arts opportunities and spread the love of theatre and the performing arts within our community and among our student body. The Performing Arts, Speech and Debate Teacher will direct the Middle School Musical and serve as a Middle School Advisor. This Teacher is knowledgeable about the cognitive and social-emotional development of middle school students. In addition to the duties and responsibilities below, the Teacher will be positive, collaborative, innovative, and passionate. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Teach the Middle School Speech and Drama classes as well as additional drama, technical theater, and speech & debate electives Direct the annual after-school musical; recruit and organize students and manage all rehearsals Recruit and organize students as members of the interscholastic Speech & Debate team Proactively communicate with students, parents, and advisors about student progress Collaborate with teachers in the Arts Department to promote an innovative, challenging and age-appropriate Arts program to students. Serve as a Middle School Advisor Recruit students for and organize and lead the interscholastic Speech and Debate Team. Attend Speech and Debate tournaments. Actively seek opportunities for professional development Attend school events as needed Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts, Communications, or a field of study related to performing arts; Master's degree preferred Experience in theater education and directing Demonstrated knowledge and experience in child development and educational practices Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment and a commitment to cultural competency Strong initiative and organizational skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills An ability to work in a joyful, collegial and collaborative environment A sense of humor, warm personality, and growth mindset
