JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for provide medical treatment and evaluation to all patients and collect proper documentation explaining care and treatment of each patient. MAJOR DUTIES Responds to emergency calls, assesses patient condition and makes critical care decisions quickly. Collects pertinent patient care data and transfers that data to a medical professional based on state guidelines. Completes paperwork in legible handwriting for all patient calls. Maintains a running inventory of medical supplies on the response vehicle and makes purchases when necessary. Participates in continuing education. Maintains operational readiness of vehicle and equipment. Performs station duties. Territorial knowledge and training. Equipment training. Policy and procedure training. Skill assessments and training. Inventory and restocking of supplies and equipment. Technical Rescue Operations. Performs related duties. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of statutes, laws, policies, and protocols. Knowledge of anatomy, cardiology, and physiology. Knowledge of computers and job-related software. Knowledge of intubation and drug calculations. Knowledge of the life support, ACLS, and Basic Life Support. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in interpersonal relations. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The EMS Shift Supervisor assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include Harris County Board of Commissioners Policies, Harris County EMS Policy and Procedure Manual, OCGA Title 31 Chapter 11, Georgia Department of Public Health Rules and Regulations, Chapter 511-9-2, and Harris County EMS Protocols and Standing Orders per the Medical Director. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK The work consists of related administrative, medical and technical duties. Stress, hostile patients, and the weight of equipment contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to provide medical treatment and evaluation to all patients and collect proper documentation explaining care and treatment of each patient. Success in this position contributes to patients receiving effective and efficient treatment while being transported to a facility/hospital. CONTACTS Contacts are typically with paramedics/EMT, patients/customers, Dispatch, nurse, doctors, first responders, and law enforcement. Contacts are typically to provide services, resolve problems, and to give or exchange information. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell. The work is typically performed in a noisy place, and occasionally outdoors in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS More than two years of related experience required; or Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Possession of or ability to readily obtain appropriate state EMS certification. State Paramedic License.
