Organizing & Advocacy Specialist

Description:
Basic Function The organizing and advocacy specialist is responsible for organizing local and statewide non-partisan civic engagement initiatives with a focus on capacity and long-term sustainability, coalition building and grassroots organizing. Responsibilities Policy and Organizing Research: Develop materials on issues of concern as directed. Research and implement strategies for increasing civic engagement among people with disabilities. Maintain an up-to-date awareness of administrative, legislative, and regulatory activity and climates pertinent to the interests of the disability community. Community Education: Keep advocates and partners up-to-date on policy issues and advocacy opportunities through electronic newsletters, social media posts, blog content, etc. Serve as an accessibility specialist spokesperson in targeted outreach efforts. Develop and maintain partnerships with businesses, organizations, and public entities to promote disability awareness, accessibility, and inclusion. Provide supportive information, as requested, to advance legislation and policy impacting disability rights and community access. Develop, promote, and present up-to-date professional trainings in the areas of systems and individual advocacy, Medicaid, civic engagement, and diversity and inclusion as it relates to disability. Advocacy: Recruit and develop an engaged, diverse pool of advocates across a variety of disabilities, demographics, circumstances, and ages. Help advocates craft stories and messages to be shared with decision-makers, the media, and the broader community. Facilitate story sharing events for civic engagement, Medicaid/public benefits education, and other advocacy opportunities and grant projects. Strategically plan and execute virtual and in-person advocacy events to advance Paraquad's legislative agenda. Collaboration: Work with partners, advocates, and Public Policy staff to coordinate strategic advocacy related to identified priorities. Coordinate Paraquad's civic engagement efforts by actively engaging and mobilizing community members, staff, and board members in various initiatives. Identify and develop community leaders inside and outside the greater St. Louis area to coordinate civic engagement efforts and provide continual support and training to leaders. Work closely with policymakers to further Paraquad's legislative priorities. Work closely with all Public Policy and Advocacy team members and the President to ensure that Paraquad maintains and/or establishes involvement in a wide variety of advocacy activities on the federal, state, and local level. Work with various coalitions, committees, and organizations on public policy issues. Provide independent living and advocate training to Paraquad staff and Board of Directors as needed. Work with youth in Paraquad's youth program to help them become effective self-advocates and engaged disability advocates at the systems level. Work with funders and the public policy and youth services teams to successfully accomplish grant requirements and deliverables. Miscellaneous: Understanding of and commitment to the independent living philosophy. Document work activities and services provided according to agency policies and procedures. Complete other related duties as assigned. Complete all mandatory trainings per fiscal year. Skills Required: Knowledge of Independent Living philosophy General knowledge of disability-related policy Policy Research and Analysis Knowledge of the legislative process Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team Understanding of effective social media campaigns and best practices Communication skills Working Hours and Conditions Working hours are generally Monday - Friday with occasional flex time for weekend events. This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment and communication software. Travel Based out of Paraquad's office in St. Louis, MO, this position requires travel to/from the office. Occasional travel throughout the state, particularly to Jefferson City, is also required. Education and Training Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent related experience required. Experience Experience with people with disabilities, disability related policy, and the independent living philosophy.
