​ Guiding Star Southwest, a division of Southwest Coalition, Inc., is searching for a Maternal Support Specialist (MSS) to join its mission in expanding life-affirming services for women in Las Cruces, New Mexico. As an affiliate of the national Guiding Star Project and inspired by St. Mary, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Guiding Star Southwest is committed to delivering trauma-informed healthcare that respects the whole person by considering a woman’s mind, body, and soul. The organization’s focus spans the full spectrum of women’s health, from puberty through perimenopause, and emphasizes fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and motherhood, while striving to reduce trauma by advocating against societal pressures that may compromise the natural functions of a woman’s body. The Opportunity As we expand our core services to Las Cruces, New Mexico we are looking for pro-life Maternal Support Specialists to be responsible for working closely with families in their homes and providing resources and support to women. To be a successful Maternal Support Specialist at Guiding Star, you should be dedicated and focused on providing reliable care and education to your families, focused on “wholism” or whole-person care which considers a person’s mind, body, and spirit. You should have a strong working knowledge of resources within the community, as well as a patient, caring, and detail-oriented personality. Position Overview The role of the Maternal Support Specialist entails delivering nurturing home-based services to families with young children and expectant mothers. These encompass a spectrum of offerings, from frequent personalized home visits to engaging community playgroups. The position encompasses providing invaluable family support, as well as acting as a vital conduit for resource and referral services. A core aspect of this role involves upholding the exacting standards of the NM ECECD Home Visiting Program and adhering meticulously to the policies and procedures laid out by Guiding Star Southwest. Must be Christ-centered, ready & willing to share their God-given talents with a servant-heart. Key Areas of Responsibility: Plan and provide bi-weekly home visits to eligible families across Dona Ana County in accordance with NM ECECD guidelines. Facilitate nurturing parent/child interactions and provide families with information & resources on child development, health and nutrition, positive parenting techniques, and community services. Conduct comprehensive assessments of families' needs, strengths, and challenges using appropriate screening tools and observation techniques. Plan & facilitate group connections and playgroups to encourage socialization among families and promote a sense of community. Promote maternal mental health and provide support to the expectant family. Provide prenatal and postpartum parent education to prenatal women. Engage in ongoing professional development activities, including reflective supervision, training sessions, workshops, and conferences to enhance knowledge and skills. Maintain a full and active caseload, adhering to minimum visit requirements and other guidelines as established by program standards Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of home visits, assessments, interventions, and progress notes in accordance with program requirements. Local travel is required, and occasional long-distance travel may be required for training purposes. Other duties as assigned by supervisor The schedule may include occasional evenings or weekends to accommodate families’ availability. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; AND Must have/obtain a degree within 4 years of hire in one of the following areas: Social Work, Early Childhood Development, Marriage and Family Counseling, Infant Family Studies, or in a related field with approval from the organization. OR Obtain the Infant Family Studies Certificate within 2 years of hire Minimum of one-year of experience in an early childhood setting, or program working with pregnant women or parents of infants and toddlers preferred. Home visiting experience preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with families from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating empathy, active listening, and cultural sensitivity. Bilingual (English/Spanish) required. Ability to pass a mandatory background clearance required of all childcare workers in the State of New Mexico. CPR certified within the first 90 days of employment. Must have or obtain knowledge to be able to identify potential child abuse Reliable transportation with valid driver's license, current automobile registration and proof of auto insurance. Ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and within team settings while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards. Must exhibit computer knowledge including Google Drive, Zoom, software applications for scheduling, record keeping and office management (i.e. Athena). The role will frequently involve activities such as walking, standing, driving, and extended periods of both sitting and utilizing computer equipment and cell phones. There will also be occasional requirements for reaching with hands and arms, as well as adopting positions like stooping, kneeling, crouching, or even crawling. Additionally, the capacity to lift up to 40 pounds is expected.
