Position is open until filled.Under supervision, the Licensed Psychiatric Technician series provides psychiatric nursing and therapeutic services, treatment and other care to mentally ill, chemically dependent or emotionally disturbed patients, in a clinic or community setting. The incumbent is responsible for direct dispensing of medications to program participants, recognizing signs and symptoms of disease entities, and perform related duties as assigned in a manner to ensure a safe, healthy environment that encourages socialization and empowerment. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Psychiatric Technician I : This is the entry-level classification in the Psychiatric Technician series and will be under close supervision while experience is gained. Positions at this level are responsible for participating as a member of a treatment team providing physical and psychiatric care for mental health patients in a variety of outpatient treatment programs Supervision is received from professional medical, clinical, or nursing staff. This level is distinguished from the higher level in that the incumbents are in a learning capacity and receive additional duties as skills are gained. Psychiatric Technician II : This is the fully qualified journey-level classification in the Psychiatric Technician series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the entry level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Incumbents at this level are expected to perform the most complex tasks requiring more experience and skill. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This classification series is distinguished from the Clinical Nurse series in that the latter provides technical and functional direction to lower-level support staff and is responsible for more complex registered nursing work.Positions in the Psychiatric Technician series is flexibly staffed and generally filled by advancement from the I-level, after gaining the knowledge, skill, and experience, which meets the minimum qualifications of the higher class and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work.Example of Duties Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. Assist in communication of program participant care needs Provides medication management services to clients with mental or emotional disorders Collaborates with clinical staff Review and chart in electronic health record Concise and legible documentation of all program participant care and observations of medication treatments Initiate de-escalation techniques and/or emergency measures Take notes and physicians orders Administer medication, monitor participant response, and provide medication education Order supplies, stock areas and monitor medication inventories Check medication supplies for expiration and return/replace outdated supplies Participate in Quality Assurance Complete incident reports and insure physicians and management are fully informed of any incident occurring on the shift Observe and monitor patient reaction to medication and promptly report symptoms of adverse reaction to program nurse practitioner and physician Coordinates client care with health care providers Performs other tasks as assigned Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: Basic fundamentals of nursing care and the principles of psychiatric/mental health/chemical dependency as related to client care; state regulations regarding psychiatric/mental health/chemical dependency care including patient's rights; counseling and psychological principles and how they are applied to individuals experiencing mental disorders; needs, problems, attitudes and behavior patterns of mentally disordered patients; scope and activities of available private and public community resources; routine and skilled nursing care methods and techniques; psychopharmacology, commonly used medicine, their therapeutic effects and possible adverse reactions; current first aid methods, medical terminology, and CPR; and methods, practices, and procedures required for proper dispensation of medication to clients Skill and Ability to: Provide a supportive environment for client care; recognize and evaluate mentally or emotionally disturbed behavior; assist a multidisciplinary treatment team in planning and coordinating a program of treatment; administer medication as prescribed and recognize medication reactions and side effects; respond to a variety of situations independently: including crisis situations, making accurate assessments and taking effective action without immediate supervision; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the needs of patients and family members; maintain complete and accurate records of patient interaction and related documentation; learn to prepare client plans; establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients; provide skilled nursing care and perform patient assessment; perform the essential functions of the position in an accurate and timely fashion; make good judgments and decisions and evaluate the results of those decisions and judgments; act quickly and safely with patients exhibiting agitated or violent behavior; organize and manage a caseload; handle stress and unstable client behavior, concerns of family members and partner agencies; learn to recognize potential crises and deliver crisis intervention services. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE : Equivalent to graduation from high school and possession of a valid license as a Psychiatric Technician in California. Psychiatric Technician I : No experience required. Psychiatric Technician II : Two years of full-time work experience as a Licensed Psychiatric Technician.Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
