The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) at the University of Denver is now hiring tutors for the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year. We need tutors who have a strong background in college-level Business, Engineering/Computer Science, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences from entry-level to advanced level. This position works under the direction of the Tutoring Coordinator and LEP Associate Director. LEP Tutors assist students in building confidence, independence, and academic skills in a one-on-one setting. Tutors are also responsible for providing students with access to resources that will encourage them to achieve academic goals.Hours worked are based on student request during fall, winter, and spring quarters unless approved by the Tutoring Coordinator.Position SummaryAll LEP Tutors fall under the direct supervision of the LEP Tutoring Coordinator. Each tutor is assigned to a Lead Tutor who will act as their tutor mentor during their time as an LEP Tutor.The Learning Effectiveness Program is a unique program that serves students who are neurodiverse learners. Our students are individuals who require competent and skilled tutors to assist them in learning the academic, and some non-academic, skills needed to be successful here at DU. All new tutors must complete the online New Tutor Orientation training as well as the first 5 hours of the CRLA Certification. The Learning Effectiveness Program participates in the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Level I and Level II Certification (https://crla.net/index.php/certifications/ittpc-international-tutor-training-program), we expect that each tutor will participate in the required training activities to maintain our LEP tutoring standards and CRLA Level I AND II Certification status. These activities include, but are not limited to: * Complete the online LEP New Tutor Orientation to become familiar with LEP students' needs, working with neurodiversity, and learning to apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning in tutoring sessions. * Work toward earning the necessary 10 hours of CRLA Level I Certification training during the first year as an LEP Tutor. * Attend any/all supplemental trainings throughout the year as directed by the Tutoring Coordinator. * Complete AT LEAST 25 hours of tutoring during the academic year to meet the CRLA Level I requirements. * Attends any one-on-one meetings as requested by the Tutoring Coordinator. This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year. Essential Functions * Effectively tutors in a one-on-one environment. * Assists students in becoming self-sufficient, independent learners. * Collaborates with LEP Academic Counselors to meet the learning needs of the students. * Actively maintain and update Availability on Accudemia- our tutoring scheduling software. * Updates appointment information (changes, cancellations, etc.) within 24 hours. * Helps students clarify questions so they know why they were having trouble with the material. * Gives students academic tips and tools they can use after they graduate from DU. * Helps students think critically about the course material. * Helps students explore new ways of learning. * Helps students develop a growth mindset so that they don't feel "stuck" with their learning methods. * Helps students stay accountable before and during tutoring appointments. * Completes all Tutoring Assessments in a timely manner and clearly communicates what was covered in the session and the resulting outcomes. * Communicates via phone, email, or in-person on a consistent basis with the Tutoring Coordinator/Lead Tutor to update them with any questions, comments, or concerns they may have regarding LEP tutoring. * Additional tasks as needed and requested by the Tutoring Coordinator. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Ability to learn how to tutor students in a one-on-one environment. * Ability to implement principles of Universal Design for Learning when working with neurodiverse learners. * Ability to work with students who are experiencing anxiety and stress. * Excellent time management skills. * Excellent and proactive communication skills. * Able to adapt tutoring behaviors based on best practices and LEP needs. Required QualificationsStudent Tutors * LEP Student Tutors must be currently enrolled in DU classes. * Undergraduate students: Must be in Sophomore year or higher. * Tutors must have a 3.0 GPA or higher in the specific subject to be tutored and must provide the Tutoring Coordinator with a letter of recommendation from a faculty/staff member within their field. * Be willing to adapt tutoring behaviors based on best practices and LEP needs. Community Tutors * LEP Community Tutors must have at least 1 year of demonstrated experience in the subjects they want to tutor. * Be willing to adapt tutoring behaviors based on best practices and LEP needs. Preferred QualificationsStudent Tutors * Graduate level student. * Prior tutoring experience. * Experience working with students from neurodiverse backgrounds. Community Tutors * Prior tutoring experience. * Experience working with students from neurodiverse backgrounds. Work ScheduleThis is a part-time, non-benefitted positions. The hours for this position are flexible. Tutors can set their hours of availability but will only be paid for actual tutoring time. Tutor hours are dependent up on student appointment requests. There are other paid opportunities such as Prep time, Admin time, and time spent on professional development activities required by the Tutoring Coordinator. Tutors may not work over 40 hours per week, or 80 hours per 2-week pay period.All new tutors are required to complete the New Tutor Orientation online training and the CRLA Level 1 (Basics of Tutoring) online training before they will be allowed to begin tutoring.Application DeadlineFor consideration, please submit your application materials by 4:00 p.m. (MST) June 7, 2024.LEP Tutoring applications will be accepted a quarter ahead of time. For example, if tutors are needed for the Fall Quarter, then the application will be live starting in the Summer Quarter. Hourly RangeStudent TutorsThe hourly range is $18.25 - $21.25.This position is eligible for federal work-study, which requires eligibility through the Financial Aid Office. This position is also open to non-work study funded students. Community TutorsThe hourly range is $18.25 - $21.25.The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
