The City of Mississauga’s Legal Services Division is a full-service law department that handles a wide variety of interesting and rewarding files that directly impact the way people live, work and play in Mississauga. Legal Counsel are supported in their work by experienced and skilled law clerks, legal assistants and articling students and have access to the technology and software they need to do their work efficiently and easily. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled lawyer to practice with the support of a collegial and collaborative team. Duties and Responsibilities Reporting to the Interim Manager, Real Estate Law, the successful candidate will: • Provide strategic and legal advice to City Council, Senior Leadership and City staff on a wide variety of commercial real estate transactions, including easements, leases and expropriation law matters; • Take carriage of files involving all aspects of commercial real estate agreements, including Agreements of Purchase & Sale, Commercial Leases, License Agreements, Easements, Encroachment Agreements and Joint Use Agreements; • Provide legal advice and guidance to staff in the City’s Realty Services Section; • Conduct advanced legal research including issues related to the Land Titles Act, the Commercial Tenancies Act and be familiar with Teraview registration software; • Conduct complex title searches and providing written opinions thereon; • Draft reports, legal opinions, by-laws and resolutions in a timely manner; • Anticipate and address legal issues to protect the interests of the City and reduce exposure to legal risks; • Advise staff regarding legislation, regulatory requirements and developments.
