Position description Lead Neuroscientist (QBI/UCSF; Krogan lab) About QBI The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI; https://qbi.ucsf.edu/) at the University of California, San Francisco, is about breaking down the walls in academia and creating teams between scientists working in diverse disciplines to tackle problems that can only be solved by many groups working together. QBI will lead by example with teams of scientists solving each individual problem - together. QBI scientists are experts in developing experimental and computational tools that can be applied to many biological or biomedical problems. These tools allow for effective connection between discovery research and the clinic, enabling the development of new breakthrough therapies for disease. As a highly dynamic and collaborative institute, QBI applies disease agnostic technology such as proteomics and functional genomics, as well as biochemistry, computational biology, and bioinformatics to unravel the molecular networks underpinning neurodevelopmental/psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as cancer and infectious diseases. Our current projects include research on tauopathies, pain, autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and others. Our projects leverage a wide array of experimental approaches with a collaborative infrastructure necessary for long-term investigation. QBI scientists interface with other highly productive and exceptionally collaborative researchers to further our understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving pathogenic diseases and discovering new avenues for therapeutics. The Role We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative Lead Neuroscientist to spearhead research efforts and facilitate the coordination of large collaborative scientific initiatives. Working with QBI Director Nevan Krogan, project PIs, and the QBI scientific leadership, you will design, oversee, and coordinate collaborative projects with a variety of academic institutions, philanthropies, and industry partners. The successful candidate will: Lead and manage a team of researchers and trainees in unravelling mechanisms of different neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. Provide scientific oversight including review and advice on study design, modeling, data analysis and validation, and implementation of new technologies to answering key scientific questions. Launch new projects and provide strategic planning to our neuroscience grant portfolio, spanning research on neurodevelopmental/psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. Track progress toward project goals, facilitate coordination among participating partners, evaluate project data and results, and report project status to leadership. Identify new funding opportunities, coordinate submission of new project proposals and preparation of manuscripts. Interface with stakeholders in academia and industry as well as funders. This position is for the job classification of Professional Researcher and requires a scientist qualified for independent research at the level of principal investigator. It is not a faculty research position. The ideal candidate should be independent, a creative problem solver, and original thinker. Applicants will have strong written, verbal, and presentation skills and an ability to communicate and work in an interdisciplinary team environment.
