Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVASC) is an accredited public school serving students in grades 8-12. Teachers provide instruction, support, and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students' individual needs. Teachers monitor student progress through K12's learning management system. They actively work closely with students and parents/Learning Coaches to advance each student's learning toward established goals. Teachers typically work from home but must travel occasionally throughout the year to various school functions, such as state testing or as otherwise required by the school.This is a full-time position. Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week is required. Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 8-4 or as defined by the school.Essential Functions: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.JAG Program * Provides appropriate curriculum and ensures students achieve specific JAG competencies through classroom instruction; teaches through a variety of methods including project-based learning, lecture, hands-on activities, and team teaching; tailors the program and teaching methods for the needs of each specific student and implements an intervention strategy for each participant using an Individualized Development Plan. * Ensures an appropriate pool of students by directly recruiting students and obtaining referrals from an in school Advisory Committee consisting of school personnel; holds interviews with prospective candidates and those making referrals to determine, using JAG guidelines, the appropriateness of the prospective student for the program. * Administers testing programs including JAG pre-/post-assessments and career interest surveys. * Ensures positive perceptions of the JAG-SC program within schools by developing and maintaining positive, effective working relationships with school personnel including teachers, administrators, students, and members of the in-school Advisory Committee. * Advocates for the program and develops a pool of effective community support resources by working with employers, parents, civic groups, and legislators to build awareness of and support for the program; develops job opportunities, participates in public relations activities, attends meetings and speaks to various community groups. * Builds appreciation for teamwork, sense of belonging, and commitment to community service among JAG SC students by organizing and serving as advisor to a JAG-SC Career Association; creates training opportunities through hands-on activities, film presentations, guest speakers, and workshops; assists with civic and social opportunities. * Provides students with guidance, counseling, and support within appropriate limits; refers students to additional support services on an as-needed basis; takes responsibility for learning and complying with school policies such as mandated reporting, discipline, attendance, and the like. * Complies with all JAG documentation requirements in a timely fashion including contacts and activities involving students, employers, and other groups; develops and maintains a well-organized filing system. * Records information and data daily using the online electronic National Data Management System (e NDMS). * Assists students in finding and maintaining quality employment and/or post-secondary educational programs upon graduation; works closely with students and employers for 12 months after the end of the school year to ensure a satisfactory employment outcome; develops a plan for contacts with non graduates to ensure effective transition to employment or additional education. * Participates in staff, regional, and national statewide meetings, and staff development activities.Relationship Building * Establishes and maintains positive rapport with families and regularly communicates with students and learning coaches/parents; * Elementary and Middle School Teachers support learning coaches/parents with student curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment that is in line with academy policies and procedures; * Supports students and learning coaches with the set-up and maintenance of their learning environment including basic computer troubleshooting; * Understands how both diverse and unique characteristics of students and their families impact required support; * Works collaboratively with other teachers to ensure that all students are successfully progressing through the program, that parents have a central point of contact, and that tasks are distributed among the stakeholders; * Responds to students, parents, and colleagues in a timely manner.Other Essential Functions * Performs various school-related functions such as designated by the school principal. * Participates in field trips. * Completes special projects and other projects/duties as assigned by JAG-SC Director. * Organizes social and educational activities for students and families, including sponsorship of virtual clubs, outings, marketing events or other extracurricular activities as required; * Travels to testing sites to proctor state exams. Also includes travel to monthly regional outings for students as well as professional development.Additional Required Qualifications * Pedagogical knowledge of content being taught and ability to apply critical thinking * Knowledge of state content standards and ability to align those with the K12 curriculum * Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes * Ability to problem solve independently and have a high level of organization * Availability to work twelve (12) months per year * Ability to develop curriculum and educational opportunities consistent with the JAG Model * Understanding of interdependency of deadlines on multiple projects and able to act to preserve integrity on other people's deadlines * Skills in human relations, leadership, supervision, and motivational techniques * Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week * Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 8-4 or as defined by the school * Ability to travel as required (on average once per month and/or approximately 10% of the time) for face to face professional development, student testing, and as required by school * Access to reliable high-speed internet * Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word; PowerPoint; * Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms * Ability to maintain teacher certification/professional development hours and fluency in K12 systems, programs and curriculum * Ability to clear required background checkREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree and valid teaching certificate required AND * Six (6) months of teaching experience or equivalent combination of education and experience AND * Ability to travel for state testing, monthly outings, professional development, and other required in-person eventsCertificates and Licenses: Appropriate South Carolina teaching certificationResidency Requirements: Must reside in South CarolinaPTO available: 10 days during the school year + school holidays + 6 weeks of summer breakCompensation and BenefitsCertified staff are compensated based on degree earned and years of experience on their certificate. Non-certified staff are compensated based on a combination of education and relevant experience.
