Job Summary: The Human Resources Generalist assists in the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Office. The person in this role will provide recruiting and general support to both parishes and schools of the Diocese of Austin. The position reports directly to the Director of Human Resources with some latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative. Ministerial Character The Bishop is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the Church (the diocese) entrusted to him. In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ's mission present and enduring as a Shepherd of the Christian Community. To fulfill his mission, the Bishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or laypeople). He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. Each position employed in the Diocese of Austin helps to extend the ministry of the Bishop in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church. Essential Job Duties: As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as conducted in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Austin in both your professional and personal life. Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church. Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed. Ensure that schools follow the process of recruiting, vetting, and hiring employees while managing the background check approval process. Train hiring managers and others in interviewing techniques and best practices and use of the ATS system. Leverage ATS, Job Boards, Educational Associations to assist schools in the hiring and sourcing of qualified and experienced personnel. Assist Superintendent in the sourcing and hiring process for School Principals and Presidents when needed. Establish effective communication and relationships with school liaisons to guide and assist them in the day-to-day managing of school-specific HR functions. Serve as first-level contact at the Diocese of Austin for school personnel issues that arise, understanding escalation protocols to the Human Resources Director and Superintendent. Assist the Director of HR and the Superintendent in conducting preliminary investigations as requested and delivering preliminary findings to gather multiple perspectives on issues and create preliminary recommendations where appropriate. Use skills in communication and effective management practices to ensure flexibility and identification of situations that require immediate action or attention with the use of professional maturity, emotional intelligence, and initiative-taking decision making. Plan and conduct yearly new employee orientation sessions utilizing new technologies to ensure a well-streamlined and efficient process of adherence to State and Federal employment compliance. Conduct yearly background checks for all current Catholic school employees. Periodically attend School sponsored meetings for faculty, staff and principal meetings when appropriate the HR Function. Attend the Office of Catholic Schools when HR . Work closely with the Benefits office and Director of Human Resources in the management of all Medical, Personal, and Military leaves ensuring complete compliance with the various leave tracking policies across all schools. Assist the Director of HR on all ADA requests for accommodation and work with school management to ensure compliance with findings. Maintain FMLA files to include all supporting documentation and final leave tracking calendars for all schools. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations. Accomplish human resources and organization mission by completing related projects as needed. Maintain a work schedule that maximizes availability to staff and others. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Knowledge of and ability to use human resources practices, procedures, guidelines, and standards. Knowledge of and ability to effectively apply employment laws, rules, policies, procedures, and standards to personnel issues. Knowledge of Human Resources Management systems such as Paylocity, or ADP. Knowledge of applicant tracking systems and job boards. Knowledge of Human Resources best practices. Knowledge of FMLA, Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Knowledge of Employee Relations. Skill at an intermediate level in Excel, Adobe Pro, Word, and Outlook. Skill in working collaboratively with others. Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing. Skill in effectively organizing, planning, and prioritizing projects, assignments, and tasks. Skill in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating talent acquisition processes, policies, and procedures. Ability to manage a challenging environment with multiple tasks and changing priorities. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to prioritize and manage full recruiting cycle for high-level stakeholders. Ability to develop and effectively present material for public speaking and staff training purposes. Ability to think critically and analytically to arrive at effective solutions to personnel issues. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited American college or university or equivalent in a foreign country. Experience: Six (6) years of full-time, wage-earning, related work experience. Language Requirement: English (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing). Catholic Requirement: Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing. Licenses/Certifications: Valid Texas driver's license. Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period. Working Conditions: All employees of the Diocese of Austin are engaged in ministry and closely tied to the Bishop in the exercise of his ministry and obligations to the church. The Diocese of Austin is an at-will employer. All buildings and vehicles owned by the Diocese of Austin are tobacco-free. Working in a challenging environment with priorities and plans that may change rapidly. Working on weekends, evenings, and some holidays may be required. Will be exposed to religious ceremonies, conduct, and speech including Catholic Christian prayer and liturgical celebrations. Will be required to adhere to established dress codes and conduct standards. May be required to use personal or diocesan vehicles to drive to parishes or other off-site locations. Traveling within and outside the diocese to meetings and other events may be required, and travel may include overnight lodging.
