Heavy Equipment Operator The Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs has the mission of assisting veterans, active duty service members, their families and dependents, in securing benefits earned through military service. The agency is recruiting to fill open Motor Equipment Operator III (Heavy Equipment Operator) positions in its State veterans cemeteries in Owings Mills, Crownsville, and Cheltenham. Main Purpose Of Job Operates various pieces of standard or specialized equipment such as front end-loaders/backhoes, sweepers, or 3/4 ton trucks. Measures and excavates grave for interment of casketed or cremated remains. May train cemetery grounds caretakers to operate equipment as needed. Minimum Experience Qualifications One year of experience in the operation of complex or specialized construction or maintenance equipment which has a pedal operated clutch and a multi-speed manual transmission.Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Equipment Operator classifications or Equipment Operator and Vehicle Operator specialty codes in the Equipment Operation field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. Desired or Preferred Qualifications Experience in cemetery maintenance.Experience in grounds and building maintenance.Ability to effectively operate multiple pieces of equipment; including but not limited to tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes and vault haulers.Ability to perform routine maintenance on operating vehicles. Ability to perform heavy physical labor.Ability to deal effectively and courteously with superiors, co-workers and the public. Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications Applicants for Motor Equipment Operator III must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License depending on the type of equipment operated. All applicants must list their license number and date of issue on the application.
