GROUNDS MAINTENANCE CREW CHIEF NON-EXEMPT The beautiful tree-lined City of New Carrollton is a residential community located in suburban Prince George's County, approximately eight miles from Washington, D.C. New Carrollton has a diverse population of over 12,500 residents. The City of New Carrollton is looking for a full-time Grounds Maintenance Crew Chief with a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License to join our Public Works Department. This position works under the direct supervision of the Horticulturist. Work assignments for this position are performed primarily outdoors with exposure to loud noise, moving machinery, dirt, dust, debris, chemicals, and foul odors. The ideal candidate must have (4) four years of progressive experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance, as well as prior experience overseeing crew members on landscaping related projects. One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment such as a dump truck, loader and/or a backhoe is required. Must have a clean driving record for a minimum of (12) consecutive months. Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus. Hourly rate starts at $18.17; however, pay commensurate with experience. TYPICAL TASKS Assists Horticulturist with planning assignments and projects such as planting flowers, shrub pruning, and leaf collection. Assists Horticulturist with coordinating and participates in the City's snow removal and grass mowing operations. Conducts landscaping maintenance within City parks and grounds. Plans and schedules yearly inspections of City's playgrounds and grounds. Assigns, reviews, and inspects work assigned to employees. Coordinates maintenance on mowers, landscaping equipment, and snow removal equipment; submits requests for parts replacement and repair. Monitors the distribution of equipment including hand tools, mowers, light and heavy machinery, sharp tools, shovels, sledgehammers, weed eaters, rakes, backpack blowers, axes, sprayers, and commercial vehicles for the purpose of grounds maintenance. Implements and practices safe and efficient work ethics; wears safety vest, gloves, and glasses when exiting the vehicle to remove curbside greenery. Participates periodically in refuse collection and street cleaning. Performs related work as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS Knowledgeable of necessary safety measures to use when working with heavy equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, employees, property owners, residents and the general public; ability to perform strenuous tasks for extended periods of time in various types of weather, and lift up to (50) fifty pounds on a regular basis. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Four years of experience in grounds keeping, landscaping or closely related experience. Any satisfactory combination of experience, education, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be deemed acceptable.
