JOB/POSITION TITLE : Field Services Officer - Overnight Shift STATUS : Non-exempt PRIMARY PURPOSE : Responsible for the humane capture and impoundment of stray animals, responding to general public complaints concerning animals, and responding to animal emergencies as well as overnight duties as assigned. Reports To : Senior Manager of Field Operations Supervises : Volunteers as needed ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS : Animal Pick Ups and Emergencies. Picks up animals as assigned by dispatch or when calls are received and transports them to the Hawaiian Humane Society or returns to owner in a safe, humane manner. Case File Management. Produces and maintains accurate case files, records, and reports as required according to Hawaiian Humane procedures. Prepare both written and oral reports if needed and log reports into computer when required. Patrol and Emergency Rescue Provides emergency rescue and transportation of sick and injured domestic and wild animals. May be required to assist the Honolulu Police Department in enforcement operations during their assigned shift. Animal and Customer Care. Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion, according to established organization procedures. Promotes a humane and caring attitude toward all animals through education to the public and example of proper care of animals. Vehicle Maintenance . Responsible for vehicle and equipment cleaning, disinfecting and restocking according to Hawaiian Humane established procedures. Individual Growth. Continues to educate one-self concerning animal welfare issues, techniques, procedures and equipment and implement into daily activity if according to Hawaiian Humane procedures. Field Services Calls. Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service, prioritizes calls. Relays pertinent information in a factual and concise manner. Logs service calls in to the database accurately. Uses good judgment in making decisions for both emergency and routine situations. General Inquiry Calls. Responsible for handling general calls from the public. Must be knowledgeable at all times of Humane Society activities, processes and protocols, and direct calls as necessary. Treats callers in a friendly and professional manner. Follows up on public requests in a timely manner including returning phone calls. Lost & Found Support. Assists public with lost and found animals, and makes efforts for reunions. Posts and updates the shelter database. Updates and files microchip forms and information. OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS : Department Support: Regularly participates in meetings with other members of the department and shares ideas and suggestions designed to improve working conditions and the organization. Other Duties as Assigned: Performs other duties as assigned to ensure a positive public image and to enhance the operation of the organization and improve the quality of life for animals. Performs Euthanasia . Euthanizes animals in emergency situations when necessary according to established HHS procedures. Administers Medication. Reports any animal in critical condition to veterinary staff. Administers Medication as directed by vet staff. Shelter Security. Activates Security alarms at night and turns them off in the morning according to established protocol. Humane Investigator Prerequisite. Competencies in this role may be considered for Humane Investigator Position if and when available. JOB CONDITIONS : Work Environment: Indoors under regular office conditions minimally; outdoors in all types of weather; and in truck the majority of shift; and on foot. Equipment Use : Shelter vehicle, computer, telephone system, radio dispatch system, dog/cat traps, net, leash/rope, catch pole, cat grabber, dart gun. Other Materials : May be trained in commercial cleaning fluids to clean truck and cages. Hours : Based on operational requirements. Must be available 40 hours a week with overtime as needed any 7 days of the week, weekends and holidays. MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND COMMUNICATION DEMANDS : Requires handling people and animals in a pleasant, courteous, and professional manner. Works effectively with other investigators and shelter personnel to achieve a high level of service. Requires working alone or with minimal supervision. Must be self-motivated. Must be able to follow instructions and procedures. Requires working under pressure with public watching or critically injured animal on occasion. Requires patience and tact when working with difficult, emotionally upset, and/or angry people. Requires detailed and correct written work with reports and animal identification procedures. Requires alertness and great attention to detail with investigations, animal handling, and working with the public. Requires sitting at desk for periods up to four hours without a break when working on written reports. Requires driving in truck for extended periods of time. Rescue attempts and animal handling may require climbing, running, crawling, or balancing in difficult, hazardous conditions. Requires lifting and carrying, unaided, up to 65 lbs. of animal body weight, either struggling or limp, for up to 50 yards including lifting from floor to vehicle compartment level with or without reasonable accommodation. Requires eye-hand coordination in handling, capturing, transporting, and restraining a live animal. Requires speaking and writing effectively and clearly in a professional manner individually and to groups. Requires interpreting and integrating written materials from field reports, witness statements, and investigations for case reports according to Hawaiian Humane procedures. Requires clear verbal communication over the telephone and radio systems to public and other staff. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS : Skills/Knowledge : Valid driver's license with a good driving record. Be knowledgeable of telephone, radio and computer operation. Must agree with and be committed to Society goals, objectives, and programs. Must be able to meet the criteria (e.g. not convicted of felony; not convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or of any criminal assault; U.S. citizen; at least 21 years of age; subject to background investigation by Chief of Police) for Honolulu Police Department deputization. Education/Training : High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience : Prefer minimum two years working with the public.
