Job Summary The Fiber Splicer is responsible for the installation of new cable lines, both underground and on utility poles, and performs maintenance on existing cables, including evaluation tests and repair. Minimum Required Qualifications Ability to meet background requirements. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English Ability to work independently Ability to communicate effectively within all levels in the organization Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks and meet deadlines Ability to maintain confidentiality Ability to make decisions and work collaboratively with others to solve problems Ability to prioritize and organize effectively Ability to analyze and interpret data Ability to effectively present information to management Ability to make decisions and solve problems while working under pressure Ability to show judgment and initiative and to accomplish job duties Ability to think strategically and anticipate future trends, needs and expectations An energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards and an appropriate professional image; Good verbal communications and writing skills Strong knowledge of MS Office software including Excel, Word and PowerPoint with the technical aptitude to learn additional databases Tasks Required by a Fiber Splicer: Utilize Fusion Splicer to splice Loose Tube & Ribbon fiber cable. Prep/Splice single-mode (SM) and multi-mode (MM) optical fiber cables Troubleshooting of fiber utilizing an OTDR. Strong communication skills required between splicer and tech ops manager so that problems can be addressed as soon as possible. Proper record keeping and be able to review cable records as necessary. Knowledge, understanding and practice of safety regulations within OSHA, NESC, and NEC, and other construction related guidelines. Maintain equipment and vehicle to a high standard. Work indoors and outdoors as needed. Be able to iterate to the project/construction managers detailed accounts of field activity, both verbal and written. Coordinate with tech ops managers to verify and perform work as directed. Night work as needed for things like node splits. Able to be on call for emergencies involving damaged cable. Must know ribbon fiber. Must know fiber to the home. Knowledge required by a Fiber Splicer: Telecommunications- Knowledge of transmission and CATV telecommunications systems. Public Safety- Knowledge of keeping work area safe to the public. Computers and Electronics- Knowledge of electronic equipment and computer hardware/software for keeping proper records.
