CLINICAL DUTIES: The duties shall consist of, but are not limited to, the following - * Perform and complete pre-anesthesia evaluations for patients in all age groups, newborns through geriatrics, having outpatient and inpatient surgery. Assigns American Society of Anesthesiologist s physical status classification to the patient. The information from pre-anesthesia evaluations will be used to educate the patient about and to organize resources for potential anesthesia modalities used during the perioperative period to include intraoperative care, postoperative recovery, and perioperative pain management. * Pre-anesthesia evaluation consists of the consideration of information from multiple sources that may include the patient's medical records, interview, physical examination, and findings from medical tests and evaluations. As part of the pre-anesthesia evaluation process, the NP will be required to consult with other health care professionals to obtain information or services that are relevant to pre-anesthesia evaluation process. Perform pre-anesthesia evaluations and patient education for anesthesia services. * Take patient s medical/surgical history and performs complete physical examination or examination pertinent to the patient s chief complaint and records findings. The facility s electronic medical information systems will be used to obtain and to document pertinent patient information related to the planned surgery or procedure. * Initiates education and documentation required for patient/parent/guardian consent for Anesthesia services and procedures. Witnesses the anesthesia consent if the patient has been counseled by an Anesthesia provider. * Choose appropriate preoperative tests, as a component of the pre-anesthesia evaluation, as indicated for various purposes, including but not limited to: 1) discovery or identification of a disease or disorder which may affect perioperative anesthetic care, 2) verification or assessment of an already known disease, disorder, medical or alternative therapy which may affect perioperative anesthetic care, and 3) educating the patient about and organizing resources for potential anesthesia modalities used during the perioperative period. Ensure routine and special laboratory tests, radiographic studies, electrocardiograms, cardiac studies, and pulmonary studies are ordered as indicated by the patient s medication history or assessment, the surgical procedure, or published standards. * Prescribe preoperative medications in CHCS as appropriate and in accordance with privileges and hospital rules and regulations. * During the orientation and training period, the NP will ensure that all pre-anesthesia evaluations are countersigned by a staff anesthesia provider. The training period duration will depend upon the individual needs of the NP and will be determined by the Anesthesia Service Chief or their representative. Countersignature on pre-anesthesia evaluations will not be required once proficiency has been obtained. * Maintain documentation of all electronic and paper patient records in accordance with hospital directives and prepare all records and reports required.
