*This is a temporary, intermittent position - hours not to exceed 780 hours in a 12-month period.* The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year. The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of it's citizens." Job Purpose This position participates in all aspects of daily animal care and maintenance of the Danada Equestrian Center as well as takes lead/assisting role in assigned programs/events. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provides daily care to horses and the facility. Including but not limited to, cleaning, feeding, watering, grooming, observing, first aid, routine medical treatments, and recording information. Leads volunteers in general duties as well as work groups and special events. Tasks include heavy manual and skilled work, such as moving bales of hay and straw, bedding and feed bags (50lbs), wheel barrows, hoses, and other equipment. Performs minor repairs and upkeep as appropriate. Operates equipment in order to perform duties including but not limited to tractors, manure spreaders, mowers, string trimmers, power tools, and hand tools. Advances District mission. Participates in development and conducting of educational programs and informally engages with visitors and participants. Ensures animal diets are prepared and fed as determined by supervisor. Under the direction of supervisor, administers medication and provides medical treatment. Monitor horse health by observing eating habits, general activity, behavior, appearance, herd interaction, soundness and reports abnormal behavior and problems to supervisor. Provides notes at the end of shift, including horse health, programming, and facility needs/concerns. Recommends changes to diet, facility, herd organization, behavior and other related matters to supervisor. Monitors the condition of the facility, equipment and supplies. Initiates work orders, supply orders and emergency repairs as needed. Maintains a clean, safe and welcoming work environment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies. Follows handling procedures and other related safety guidelines. Assists in medical exams and treatment, veterinarian, and farrier appointments as directed by supervisor. May be assigned jobs that require coordination with other District departments and outside vendors. Orients and trains volunteers as assigned. Performs other duties as required, which includes but not limited to mandatory training, staff meetings, and continuing education. Education and Experience Required Education: AA/AS in Equine Science, Animal Science, or related field preferred. Related Experience: One (1) to three (3) years experience in the daily care and handling of horses and maintenance of equipment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Special training or other license, certification, etc.: Valid Driver's License Knowledge of: General equine care and handling methods, behavior, anatomy, signs and symptoms of injury and illness, occupational hazards and safe work practices, tools and equipment up to and including power tools. Skills In: Documenting observations in a thorough objective manner, ability to give and follow verbal and written directions effectively, exercising sound judgment engaging with others, responding to animal behavior problems and/or emergency situations and taking appropriate action, ability to work with and around potentially dangerous machinery and equipment, ability to work and be comfortable around potentially dangerous and unpredictable animals, interact courteously, respectfully and productively with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, visitors and participants. Starting Pay: $20.13 - $23.33 an hour Hours: Schedule will include weekends and evening hours. Hours not to exceed 780 hours in a 12-month period. Must be available to work three 5 hour shifts/week. Current available shifts are: Sunday 8am-1pm Monday 3pm-8pm Friday 3pm-8pm Saturday 8am-1pm OR 1pm-6pm (can work a 10 hour day on Saturday = 2 shifts) The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is an EEO employer.
