The Work You Will Do: Environmental Specialist 1 (37001445) An opportunity is anticipated for a self-motivated, hard-working individual to fill an Environmental Specialist 1 position at Big Lagoon State Park in Pensacola. Big Lagoon State Park is looking for a self-motivated park service professional to provide visitor services, maintenance, protection, administration, and resource management. The applicant must possess good visitor service and administrative skills and be willing to work independently. The applicant must be willing to work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays. Pay: $3000.00 per month Your Specific Responsibilities: In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department’s Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position. Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees dule found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply. This position provides biological, resource management, interpretive, and environmental analysis for the following parks, Big Lagoon, Tarkiln Bayou Preserve, Perdido Key, Black Water River, Yellow River Marsh, Black Water Heritage Trail State Parks within the Florida Park Service System. Resource Management – Participates in the execution of all facets of prescribed fire. Implements ecological burning plan for fire type plant communities; recognizes communities, controls burning techniques and maintain fire lanes. Duties include prescribing fire activities, which comprises writing prescriptions, conducting burns, maintaining files, performing evaluations, maintaining fire type equipment, serve as trainer, and maintain training files for other staff. This position also plans, recommends and monitors resource management projects such as coastal species monitoring (e.g., sea turtles and shorebirds), exotic species removal, reforestation, plant community restoration, erosion control, nuisance species control, native wildlife management, and water resources projects. This position also focuses on the monitoring and management of the imperiled Perdido Key Beach Mouse. Conducts biological research projects & analyzes the biological communities and other physical features of the park. Plan, recommend, and monitor resource management projects, including prescribed burning, exotic species removal, timber restoration, plant community restoration, erosion control, nuisance species control, native wildlife management and water resources projects. Prepare and update at least every ten years, relevant portions of management plans. Participates in the execution of all facets of prescribed fire. Consult with Park Manager, district staff and planners on the effects of design and development on park resources. Advise on the preservation, restoration and appearance of historical and archaeological sites. Recommend native trees and shrubs for landscape projects. Conducts flora and fauna surveys and coordinates biological monitoring. Utilizes state vehicles in performance of duties. Monitor contracts, pursue grant funding for resource management projects. Work with GIS and ArcView equipment and software. Gather scientific and professional reports, data and other information through field observations and studies about natural history. Gather professional reports and other information and data through interviews and library investigations about cultural history. Investigates and reports on all pending development and other projects which may threaten the natural and cultural resources of the park such as highways, dams, drainage, pesticide application and dredging. Attend public hearing on these projects to present the Division’s official statement. Assembles information into interpretive talks, brochures, exhibit copy, tour spiels and other forms of interpretation communication. Provide interpretive programs to the public through guided walks, campfire programs, speeches, and TV and radio presentations. Provide assistance to rangers involved in the interpretations in the form of slides, written material, and the design of interpretive facilities. Provide quality photographs for exhibits, programs, and publications. Participate in the resource management audit program. Supervise interns, volunteers and seasonal personnel. Conduct training sessions for park personnel, students, resource management specialist & laymen in the techniques of resource management and natural history topics. Participate at Ranger Academy and other training given on periodic basis. Maintain an office to include: correspondence files, slide files and reference library, specification writing, monthly reports and miscellaneous correspondence, maintain A-V equipment, camera, vehicle and office equipment as assigned Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: Plant taxonomy Florida’s pyric communities & management needs Basic prescribed/wildfire concepts including prescribed fire applications & techniques; Florida’s coastal wildlife species and management needs Research design & applications as they relate to ecosystem’s management Skill in: Computers & ancillary devices GIS & ArcView equipment & programs Ability to: Participate in all aspects of resource management Conduct field research, data gathering & assess resource health Communicate effectively both orally & in writing Work well with others Develop & maintain files & reports on research, monitoring, & other activities Make management recommendations & prepare pertinent portions of park management plan revisions Assemble & maintain species inventories to assess the health of ecosystems & constituent changes Lift 40 pounds Maintain a valid driver’s license Maintain required permits i.e. Sea turtle monitoring permit and any other required permits needed. Successfully meet position-specific DRP Burn Standards for Prescribed Fire Minimum Qualifications: Valid driver’s license. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the physical or natural sciences from an accredited college or university; and three years of verifiable work experience; or Any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described in this posting, for a total of six years. Passing of moderate pack test must be completed prior to employment, and annually thereafter. Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced. Pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25 pounds in under 30 minutes.
