ENGINEERING INTERN Job Description Effective Date: April 2019 PUBLIC WORKS DEPT Engineering Division Pay Grade P T 6 GENERAL PURPOSE Under the direction of the Engineering Division Manager, will perform functions associated with the surveying, design, and drafting for City projects. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Under direct supervision of a Staff Engineer in the Engineering Division, applicant will be required to do GPS surveying, mapping and drafting of public utilities. Responsible to operate GPS surveying equipment, use the most current versions of ESRI ArcInfo GIS and AutoCAD software. Must be able to report to work on time as scheduled and abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner in all circumstances. Perform other duties as assigned. Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS Physical Demands. Requires moderate physical activity. Required to push, pull or lift medium weights. Required to work in difficult working positions. May have to stand, walk, or sit in uncomfortable positions. Working Conditions. Work will be performed in an office environment and outdoors with exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, chemicals and fumes, and prolonged high noise levels. Often works in and around vehicular traffic. May at times include exposure to high stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or uncomfortable circumstances. Hazards. Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education: Enrolled in a college or university working toward a Civil Engineering degree. Valid Driver's License: Required.
