Job Description : We are currently seeking a Mid-Level Laboratory Chemist for our next-level emergency response team in Edison, NJ, less than 60 minutes from New York City. The position will support the EPA's Emergency Response Team (ERT )/ Response Engineering and Analytical Contract (REAC) Team-a critical link in our nation's environmental safety support system. REAC teams bring next-level advanced support and response to national and international incidents involving releases of oil and hazardous materials and at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. The REAC team has been called upon to conduct environmental analyses in the aftermath of numerous incidents, such as the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, the Hart Senate Office Building and U.S. Postal Service facilities anthrax threats, and the Space Shuttle Columbia accident. This important chemistry position involves the performance of laboratory testing at the EPA Edison Laboratory and support in a mobile laboratory at sites nationwide. The associate performs Toxic Organic (TO-15) gas analysis and GC-MS/MS analysis of air samples, analytical Data Entry into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and review of organic analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results. We will provide the ideal candidate with on-the-job training in a collaborative environment, with opportunities for learning and expanding knowledge and skills. Salary Range: $65,000 to $95,000 DOE Duties and Responsibilities: Perform VOC analysis by Method TO-15 using Agilent GC/MS systems Perform stationary and mobile air monitoring using the GC/MS/MS Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyzer ( TAGA ) Perform vapor intrusion and indoor air sampling and analysis including sub-slab port installation/sampling Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate instruments Prepare reagents, standards, and samples to be used in performing analyses Interpret and evaluate data, create an Electronic Date Package (EDP), and upload results to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for a final report Perform review on analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results Input data into modeling software and EPA-approved dispersion models Perform SOP review, internal audits, and corrective action when needed Support general lab operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain lab supply inventory Assist with data validation Assist other TechLaw offices with field work activity upon request Required Qualifications: B.S. in Chemistry or in a closely related scientific discipline Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, which could include analytical chemistry work supporting advanced degree Experience with basic laboratory safety practices and QA/QC requirements Excellent computer skills; proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines At least 21 years of age, with valid driver's license and a safe driving record The ability to travel for emergency response (up to 25%) and to be on-call outside of regular work hours Preferred Qualifications: Experience in analysis by GC/MS, LC-MS/MS, or GC-MS/MS Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities Environmental training (e.g., 40 or 24 Hour HAZWOPER certification), familiarity with air monitoring/environmental sample collection devices and maintenance, and data recording and processing skills Applicants must be a citizen of the United States of America, or an alien who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence. Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
