Our busy regional law firm is hiring an elder law paralegal to assist our legal team in preparing legal documents, reviewing financials and completing filings and records, coordinating law office activity, greeting and working directly with clients, and conducting legal research. Applicants should be experienced in elder law/estate planning and highly-organized professionals with great attention to detail. This is a rapidly growing practice area within our Firm, and we are seeking a professional who wants to contribute to building systems to support this growth over time. Responsibilities:• Assist attorneys with drafting, revising, and finalizing documents in estate planning, including health care advance directives, durable powers of attorney, wills, trusts, Medicaid, guardianship, codicils, and trust amendments• Calendar deadlines, especially critical court filing and deadline dates, but also to track deadlines for tasks, file activity, and completed work• Monitor daily schedule of the practice, manage and attend initial meetings with clients to review drafts of certain documents and field questions, escalating to attorneys as necessary• Complete and prepare estate and trust administration paperwork, inventories, and accounting, including entering financial data and compiling supporting documentation• Assist attorney with compiling and organizing documentation to support applications for Medicaid planning and long-term care benefits• Communicate with Clerks of Court, financial advisors, tax professionals, and insurance companies related to estate and trust administrations and estate planning• Verify property ownership, request property descriptions, record deeds, file powers of attorney, and other documents related to real estate records with the Registry of Deeds or Clerks of Court• Communicate professionally with clients via phone, in-person, and email to set up appointments, discuss draft documents and changes to documents, and answer general client inquiries• Complete basic administrative duties as requested, e.g., scanning, paper, and electronic file maintenance and organization, notarization, formatting, printing, and assembly of documents• Maintain billable hour requirements, assessed as a performance metric both weekly and year-to-date. The firm has a billable time goal of 90 hours monthly for all legal staff• Be a part of a great team in a growing office, taking ownership of and responsibility for work product, professional presentation, client service, and maintenance of a positive team dynamic and workspace Qualifications:• MUST have comprehensive knowledge of and experience in an elder law/estates planning practice, preferably as a paralegal• Litigation experience is a plus for guardianship and estate litigation cases• Ability to communicate with Attorneys and staff in a pleasant, cordial, and courteous manner and capability to “play well with others” with a common goal in mind, to act professionally and competently in all facets of the law office environment• Patiently and effectively communicate with the senior client (from boomers to depression-era) and family - many are in stressful situations and have health problems or physical limitations requiring accommodation but are capable of decision-making• Strong problem-solving skills to proactively anticipate and resolve issues and bring them to attorneys’ attention• An eye for process improvement to make recommendations to increase our quality of client service• Prompt turnaround time to return requested assignments within 72 hours• Excellent attention to detail and time management• Self-starter, resourceful, compassionate, responsive, adaptable, excels at most things Compensation: $18 - $30 hourly, DOE About Company: We are a fast-growing regional Family and Elder Law Firm with multiple offices in North Carolina and South Carolina.
