The positions are grant funded through May 31, 2022 and exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements. Position Purpose Under the direction of the Assistant Director, this position is responsible for maintaining and building positive relationships with participants, families, and partner schools and promoting high school academic achievement and post-secondary success for program participants. This position develops and teaches college success courses and plans career/cultural workshops. These responsibilities require strong organizational abilities and coordination of student workers and temporary staff, as well as coordination with other programs and organizations like outreach, colleges, universities, community-based organizations, social service agencies, and other Evergreen programs and offices. The position requires commuting between work sites, including Evergreen, schools, agencies, and cultural events.Program ProfileThe Evergreen State College Upward Bound Tacoma program provides educational enrichment, promotes high school achievement, and increases participation in post-secondary education among students traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, including youth from low-income families and potential first generation college students in the Tacoma Public Schools District. Services include year round academic support including a six-week Summer Learning Institute with a residential component hosted at Evergreen. Upward Bound Tacoma’s services to students at Lincoln & Mount Tahoma High Schools support the mission of The Evergreen State College to provide outreach and services to local communities. The Upward Bound Classic grant has been funded at The Evergreen State College since 1977, and both grants are currently in the third year of a five-year funding cycle. The program is contingent upon continued federal funding. Nature and Scope This position is responsible for assessing individual participant’s needs, as well as developing and implementing plans of action to ensure high school and college success. The position is also responsible for teaching, planning, and developing curriculum for the after school program at the target high schools, Saturday school, and Summer Program. Responsibilities include assessing participants’ needs; creating individual action plans; monitoring academic progress; ensuring students enroll in college preparatory courses necessary for acceptance to college; providing academic, personal, and career advising support; serving as a liaison for the teacher/student/parent relationships is essential; and keeping the Assistant Director informed of program and student progress. Working closely with school personnel and community partners, the position supervises and manages after-school activities, evening and weekend activities, and monthly Saturday meetings. This position also supports other Upward Bound activities, including special events and recognition programs and assists with data collection and report writing. The incumbent is responsible for providing direct services to participants in Tacoma and is required to assist and support all project events (i.e., field trips, training of tutors and mentors, and summer and enrichment activities). Essential Functions • Assess individual student’s needs and implement individual action plans designed for Upward Bound participants.• Create and teach academic enrichment, study skills, and life skills curriculum to participants.• Maintain participant files and information in database, including collecting information and inputting contact information, transcripts, and student statistics for Annual Performance Report.• Enroll participants, including offering informational meetings, meeting with parents, collecting applications, reviewing applications, verifying data, and interviewing students.• Assist with the preparation of the Annual Performance Report.• Work closely with school personnel and other Upward Bound staff to design and implement effective academic intervention strategies for participants.• Coordinate and provide for the following: academic enrichment; education, career planning, and recreational activities by reserving meeting space, transportation, accommodation, meals and event admissions, and by distributing and collecting parent permission forms for activities, such as tutoring, summer residential experience, Saturday School, and college campus visits.• Develop and provide academic enrichment, cultural, and career planning activities for participants.• Teach and lead in the development of Summer/Saturday School curriculum, college campus visits, college fairs, workshops, career explorations, cultural events, camping, hiking, and team sports.• Assess, monitor, and report participant progress through the following: testing, individual consultation, and collecting and evaluating test scores, grades, and progress reports.• Conduct follow-up tracking, programming, and collect data on graduate participants through four years of higher education.• Supervise afterschool tutors, volunteers, temporary employees, and interns at assigned schools.• Supervise and transport program participants in sponsored activities, including evening and overnight events and activities.• Design, create, and post a quarterly electronic Upward Bound newsletter online.• Advise and advocate for participants individually and in groups in areas related to educational success and higher education, such as study skills, time management, college testing, college application, career planning, and financial aid information.• Refer participants to social and health services when needed.• Develop essential tools to provide a venue that will impart strategies, information, and educational opportunities to parents, including college admissions and financial aid.• Answer office phone and drop in questions.• Organize and file program records.• Provide support to the Evergreen community through participation on committees and by attending events.• Attend Upward Bound staff meetings.• Develop and facilitate curriculum development workshops for staff.• Other duties as assigned. Additional Duties Knowledge Skills and Abilities • Skill in and ability to create and teach academic enrichment, study skills, and life skills curriculum.• Strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize and work independently with minimum supervision, including the ability to complete high-quality work under pressure.• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.• Enthusiasm for working with adolescents and young adults, including ability to work collaboratively with high school officials, parents, and students.• Ability to research, understand, and summarize information regarding secondary education, post-secondary education, community resources, and events, such as graduation requirements, course requirements, college admissions, financial aid, career pathways, and cultural events.• Ability to develop and facilitate workshops for staff.• Ability to provide services and activities that promote educational success, such as pro-collegiate academic advising, tutoring, SAT / ACT workshops, portfolio creation, and admissions and financial aid processes.• Commitment to educational excellence for all low-income and first-generation students regardless of social backgrounds, such as income level, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability or religion, and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and understanding of strategies to address issues affecting educational success and college participation for first generation and low-income students.• Ability to maintain confidentiality of program information and records, including student information and records.• Provide leadership for tutors, summer residential staff, and students.• Enthusiasm for on-going professional development to improve individual job and overall program performance.• Ability to participate in physical activities with students, such as team sports, hiking, and climbing.• Ability to move supplies, such as snacks, drinks, camping equipment, and educational supplies.• Proficiency with information technology, office software, and ability to learn job specific software programs.• Skill in and ability to update websites. Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree.• Two years of successful experience in an advisory, counseling, or teaching capacity in a program serving high school students, disadvantaged people, or people underrepresented in higher education. Desired Qualifications • Master’s degree in a field such as education or a social science with education focus.• Valid state teaching certificate.• Experience working in academic enrichment program for low-income, underrepresented, and underserved youth, such as Upward Bound, MESA , Upward Bound Math-Science, Education Talent Search, AVID , or HERO . Conditions of Employment • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.• This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.• Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted.
