Job Objective: The Director of Special Education will advance the District's mission and shared Key Interests by providing leadership and support to enable all students to utilize their educational opportunities to the fullest by assisting them with those problems that prevent or interfere with the student's learning, and to provide sound educational programs that comply with federal and state statutes, regulations, procedures and practices for students with special educational needs who need additional support to benefit from regular education programs. Essential Job Functions: Establishes a district-wide philosophy of least restrictive environment for serving special needs students and communicates it to school administration, staff, parents and community members. Supervise the screening, identification, referral, admission, programming, and follow-up of special education programs. Administer, supervise, and coordinate special education instructional and ancillary personnel. Attends IEP conferences and other meetings as necessary. Assumes responsibility for the accurate and punctual preparation of all special education reports, as required. Oversee/assist with evaluation of district-wide special education personnel. Advises the Superintendent of Schools in the event of anticipated expulsion action that involves a suspected student with a disability. Prepares documentation that will provide assurance that the district is complying with state and federal legislation relating to special education programs. Receives, investigates, mediates, and processes complaints under the individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and/or Chapter 115. Participates in the recruitment selection, assignment, reassignment, and evaluation of instructional and support staff assigned to special education. Implements management procedures for all aspects of the special education programs that provide for continual and systematic evaluation at all levels. Provides a comprehensive continuum of coordinated programs, including communication channels for the interface between pupil services, special education, regular education, parents, community, and other agencies. Conducts special education meetings and training to keep staff knowledgeable about legal changes, new programs, current best practices, and other pertinent information regarding special education. Incorporates delivery of differentiated curriculum and instructional practices within the educational program for special needs students. Develops a budget for the Special Education Department. Prepares state, federal, and local reports relative to special education programs. Coordinates the scheduling of staff time for personnel assigned to special education programs. Prepare state and federal program plans relating to aligned aided programs and grants - IDEA and IDEA preschool. Attend regular Board of Education meetings and special meetings as requested. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools. Working Relationships: Supervised by: Superintendent of Schools Supervises: Coordinator of Special Education, School Psychologists, Speech/Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Deaf and Hard of Hearing staff, Audiologist, Mobility/Orientation Teachers, Teachers of the Visually Impaired, Program Support Teachers, Adaptive Physical Education Teachers, PEER Teachers, and assigned Special Education/Pupil Services Department support staff. Member of the Longfellow Administrative Team Education: Required: Master's Degree in Educational Administration or related field. Licensing: Required: Must meet legal requirements for certification as a Director of Special Education and Pupil Services (5080) as established by the Wisconsin Statutes and the Department of Public Instruction. Work Experience: Required: Minimum of five years of successful experience in a related administrative or educational field. A thorough knowledge of administration of Special Education.Desired: Successful experience as a principal and/or district-level leadership and supervisory experience.
