Shoreline Fruit is the largest tart cherry producer in North America operating nearly 7000 acres of cherry orchards right here in Michigan, growing and processing over 25 million pounds of Montmorency tart cherries each year. You will be joining the team that grows, processes, markets, and sells the finest cherry products and other premium dried fruits available anywhere in the world. We have an open position for a director of quality - someone who possesses a passion for product safety & quality excellence, and the ability to drive a unified, quality centric culture across Shoreline Fruit's manufacturing teams where food safety and quality is established as a foundational component of all manufacturing processes and behaviors. Who you are: Reporting to the CEO, you will provide direction and leadership in our four key quality areas of the business - Food Safety, Quality Assurance, Sanitation, and Product Development. This role requires someone with vision and the ability to shape it, and the drive to implement positive change with improved performance. You will be leading through a cross functional team of department managers and quality technicians, but will also need to enjoy rolling up your sleeves. What you will be doing: Oversee written quality and food safety programs for Shoreline Fruit production plant(s) Verify that procedures are in place to ensure that all products are meeting or exceeding adopted standards for quality and food safety Ensure that customer surveys/audits are handled properly Verify compliance with all Good Manufacturing Practices Verify that internal test results are based on properly calibrated test equipment and periodic independent lab analysis With input from Shoreline Fruit management, develop/maintain standards and procedures for incoming raw materials With input from Shoreline Fruit management, develop/maintain standards for finished products. Ensure that product data sheets reflect current standards With input from Shoreline Fruit management, develop storage guidelines for fruits and syrups Review or develop, when necessary, sanitation procedures and documentation for processing plants to ensure compliance with food safety guidelines Monitor condition of raw materials in storage on site, including fruits and syrups Audit raw material suppliers as agreed with management Review plant SOP's from a quality perspective Participate in planning capital projects to ensure food safety concerns are addressed Uphold the duties of a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) which will include and is not limited to complete production record review as it is applicable to the food safety plan. Ensure that Shoreline Fruit maintains programs, practices and documentation necessary for the following certifications: Kosher Organic Required 3rd Party Food Safety, Food Defense and Quality certification program USDA FDA MDA Contract Manufacturing Relationships Identify quality parameters required for successful contract manufacturing arrangements, whether Shoreline Fruit is outsourcing or providing a service to others Ensure that all relevant quality documents and certifications are provided for any vendor arrangements Periodically audit facilities of vendors providing service to Shoreline Fruit Develop quality resources that can be provided to sister companies on a cost basis Facilitates Research & Development Projects Competency & Skills Required Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems The ability to listen, communicate and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences Job requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations Job requires a willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction Job requires being open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in the workplace Education & Experience Bachelor's Degree in Food Science or a related field of study. (science) 8+ years of related Quality Assurance experience in the food industry with increasing responsibility. Working knowledge of USDA, FDA, and GFSI requirements. Strong working knowledge of HACCP food safety and SQF documentation, processes and programs. Certification as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual through FSPCA approved training.
