Summary The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) is the largest of the University of Michigan's 19 schools and colleges, enrolling more than 18,000 students. Within the college, the LSA Scholarships Office is the home of traditional scholarship support for LSA's undergraduate students-disbursing nearly 15 million dollars to thousands of students this 23-24 academic year. Moreover, many units within the college provide additional forms of student financial support (e.g., travel funding, summer research funding, internship support). We are excited to welcome an experienced, knowledgeable leader looking to expand their reach in creating access for undergraduate students by serving as the college's Director of LSA Scholarships and Student Financial Support. The Director will lead the LSA Scholarship Office, while collaborating closely with the University of Michigan's central Office of Financial Aid regarding centrally-managed student financial aid packages (e.g., federal student loans and grants). The Director will oversee efforts to work collaboratively with LSA units to establish best practices and procedures for student financial support provided by units within the college. This role will report directly to the assistant dean for student development and career initiatives in undergraduate education. The LSA Scholarships unit will also maintain a dotted line of reporting to the College's Director of Finance, focused on responsibilities related to policy, procedure, and compliance. Responsibilities* Under the leadership of the Assistant Dean, you will contribute to the development of a forward-looking vision and strategy for leveraging the college's scholarship programs and other resources to further the college's deep commitment to access and to enhance support for undergraduate students with financial need. You will develop and implement new comprehensive strategies for LSA scholarship programs and collaborate with partners across the college to identify additional areas of financial need for students. You will provide oversight for LSA's scholarship awarding processes and disbursement of over $20 Million annually in undergraduate support. You will also provide oversight for the college's emergency funding mechanisms for students, and one-time awards provided by the college. You will work as a strategic partner in the design of programs and funding mechanisms that support LSA's recruitment and retention objectives, with a particular focus on expanding opportunities to support underrepresented students. You will oversee the management and monitoring of distributions and expenditures associated with LSA scholarships, ensuring proper compliance and internal controls are in place, and donor-related criteria are met in the selection of recipients and will provide reports and updates to division and college leadership. You will oversee efforts to leverage existing relationships and grow partnerships across the college and university communities related to college-based aid and to promote and sustain initiatives that foster student access. This includes working closely with our development team on strategic opportunities related to donor support for scholarships and student needs. You will provide leadership and guidance to the college community regarding federal, state, and institutional financial aid guidelines as they relate to student aid awarded by internal LSA departments and units. You will lead the LSA Scholarships Office and supervise and develop staff on the LSA Scholarship team. You will be responsible for the integrity of the unit's financial aid programs and processes and will create and update policies on compliance, accuracy, and completeness. In partnership with LSA Finance, you will develop college-wide policies, procedures, and guidelines for financial aid and other forms of student support. You will be responsible for fostering a respectful, inclusive work environment. Vigilance against all forms of workplace harassment is an affirmative duty. Required Qualifications* About You: We are looking for an experienced leader of people and programs with deep expertise in financial aid policies, processes, and regulations. Additionally, you should understand the challenges and opportunities of a large, complex organization and have the following: 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of financial aid and extensive financial aid knowledge regarding federal and state grants, federal and private loans, scholarships and work programs, and other Title IV regulations. 5+ years of formal supervisory experience; with demonstrated success leading both individuals and teams. Experience leading and managing a complex financial aid effort; high-level of proficiency with financial management and experience successfully managing large budgets. Experience leveraging technology and data analytics to report outcomes and progress as well as to forecast and anticipate needs. Ability to communicate in a clear, diplomatic, and positive manner and to build collaborative relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Experience and comfort navigating ambiguity, making independent judgments, recommending courses of action, balancing competing priorities, and communicating decisions with diplomacy. Experience handling sensitive and confidential matters with integrity. Bachelor's degree in a related area or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
