The Director of Interpretation works closely with the Museum Director in planning and evaluating programs & services of the Illinois State Museum. Primary responsibilities include overseeing exhibition programs, visitor services, discipline-based and interdisciplinary educational programming, fiscal administration, professional research, collections, art, and/or technical public service. Contributes to established goals in the Museum's exhibition programs in art, history, anthropology, botany, geology, and zoology.Develops collaborations at staff & departmental levels, and ensures activities & programs are in line with Museum priorities and objectives. Works to develop interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary programs, and nurtures a teamwork ethic across Museum locations.As a member of the Museum's Leadership Team, this position acts administratively for and collaboratively with the Museum Director. On a rotating basis (with other members of the leadership team), in the absence of the Museum Director, this position will also be prepared to lead the organization according to established policy.This position executes various highly complex assignments, executes highly specialized duties and projects that require special expertise, and possesses an extensive and intensive knowledge base in multiple relevant disciplines (e.g. exhibition design & production, informal learning, evaluation, visitor studies, business administration, art, history, anthropology, botany, geology, and zoology.) Responsible for developing an interpretive vision and plan for the organization that is relevant, inclusive, and evaluated.Assists Museum administration in formulating and carrying out strategic planning and implementation, and discipline-based programming. Also responsible for preparation of detailed specialized budget documents and/or professional reports.Performs at a level that reflects national standards and best practices of an accredited museum; and brings state, national, and/or international recognition to the Museum. Follows all relevant state & federal laws, and abides by professional museum ethics, and the ethics of each specific program area and discipline. Participates in and/or has a leadership role in state, national and/or international professional organizations.Requirements:Minimum of a M.F.A., M.A., or M.S. in a discipline relevant to this specific position, and 15 years' administrative experience in a museum or similar institution. Requires strong record of accomplishments that contribute to national stature. Requires specialized knowledge, experience, and skills that relate to the specific position, which include experience with administration and direction of fiscal, project management, research, collection, educational, exhibition, issues related to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI), and/or other programs in a museum or comparable setting. Requires demonstrated record of attracting and administering program funds.Work Hours & Location/Agency ContactAnticipated Starting Salary: $6,000-$7,000/monthWork Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, 1 hour lunch, Saturday & Sunday offNote: The Museum is open to the public every day of the year except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
