New York Peace Institute New York Peace Institute is one of the nation's largest nonprofit conflict resolution organizations, helping thousands of people peacefully, creatively, and durably resolve their disputes each year. We provide free conflict resolution services, including mediation, conflict coaching, facilitation, arbitration, and restorative justice processes virtually, and through our Brooklyn and Manhattan Centers, and in cooperation with courts, community-based organizations, schools, and City agencies. The Role The Director of Development is responsible for leading New York Peace Institute’s fundraising initiatives, building and managing external relationships, and expanding awareness about the organization and its mission. This position will report to and work closely with the CEO, and partner with NYPI’s Operations Team, Programs Team, Finance Team, and the Board of Directors. The Director of Development will be responsible for the following: Development Strategy and Planning (10%) Partner with the CEO and Board of Directors to: Determine annual development strategies and priorities Determine the most effective and sustainable allocation of organizational resources, including staff time, to development efforts Create annual fundraising work plans Keep abreast of funding opportunities and philanthropic trends relevant to NYPI Partner with the CEO in the creation of NYPI’s annual operating budget Manage and Implement Fundraising Plan (50%) Successfully raise ~500k through the implementation of fundraising work plans and management of NYPI’s development calendar Manage all aspects of the solicitation, stewardship, acknowledgement, and reporting for four primary areas of philanthropic support: Government & Foundation Funders Manage and expand NYPI’s portfolio of government and foundation funders, which currently provides ~60% of NYPI’s annual revenue Serve as NYPI’s primary grant writer and supervise grant writing consultants, as needed Create and implement systems for grants management and compliance for private, corporate, and individual grants Corporate Sponsors Continue developing NYPI’s corporate partnerships program, and manage and expand NYPI’s portfolio of corporate funders Individual Donors Develop and implement strategies for the cultivation and stewardship of current and prospective individual donors, including major donors and the Board of Directors Plan and execute a series of annual fundraising appeals including Giving Tuesday Conduct research on current and prospective individual donor Special Events Oversee coordination and implementation of fundraising and cultivation events Supervise special event vendors and/or consultants, as need External Communications Develop NYPI’s overarching external communications plan Partner with the CEO to craft NYPI voice and content for external communications and donor messaging Create and/or oversee the creation of donor communications, including donor newsletter, annual report, e-blasts, and fundraising appeals Manage the calendar of ongoing donor communications Oversee fundraising efforts on social media, including supervising consultants and/or staff, as needed Manage and support NYPI’s Ambassador Council Collaborate with Program Team Manage relationship between development department and the program teams Stay up to date on program strategy and activities Work with appropriate program staff to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with deliverables and develop proposals Development Systems and Operations (10%) Design, implement, and manage all systems and processes needed to carry out fundraising plans Create and maintain policies and procedures for development operations, including fundraising communications, prospect research, moves management, and gift processing and acknowledgement Oversee the management of NYPI’s fundraising database, establishing and implementing protocols for data entry and maintenance, and generating lists, exports, and reports Lead the process for identifying and/or creating more efficient and integrated data management systems CEO and Board of Directors Support (10%) Support the CEO and the Board of Directors with development efforts, creating and implementing strategies for leveraging directors’ networks and empowering them to act as key spokespeople and fundraisers for the organization Coordinate meetings for NYPI’s development and branding-related events including creating and distributing agendas and materials, taking notes, and managing follow-ups Internal Management and Organizational Support (20%) Partner with the Operations Manager to co-supervise the Administrative Associate. Manage the organization’s communications plan, any consultants working on organization communications and part-time Communications Manager, if applicable Supervise consultants, ongoing and project-based, as needed to implement the fundraising plan Serve on the Leadership Team; attend weekly meetings to oversee organizational strategy, implementation of organizational policies and practices, and implementation of NYPI’s DEI plan Participate in staff-wide activities, trainings, and events Required Qualifications Flexibility to work at both a strategic level and manage the day-to-day tasks associated with the implementation of a robust development program at a small organization Track record of creating and cultivating long-term relationships with institutional funders, individual donors, and board members Demonstrated success in securing new individual and institutional funding and exceeding ambitious fundraising goals Experience with grant writing, administration, and reporting Experience managing fundraising databases and developing systems and protocols to ensure organizational data is complete, current, and accurate Excellent communicator and storyteller with the ability to make NYPI’s work come alive through superior written materials A creative self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative member of a small team Exceptional project management skills; ability to coordinate among various stakeholders to complete projects and activities Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, MailChimp, fundraising databases/CRMs, and social media platforms A passion for the topics and issues NYPI’s work addresses Commitment to the mission and values of New York Peace Institute and to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment Commitment to social justice and a nuanced understanding of the ways in which NYPI’s work intersects with race and equity High level of cultural competency Preferred Qualifications Experience with government grants/contracts, annual campaigns, major gifts, and/or institutional planning Prior work experience in a mission- and culture-driven organization Demonstrated leadership and the ability to effectively supervise and train others Compensation & Benefits We benchmark and set our salaries based on other similarly sized nonprofit organizations in New York City. The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000 per year.
