Derby Academy, a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 co-educational day school with 340 students located in Hingham, Massachusetts, seeks a Director of Community and Belonging beginning in August 2024. Rooted in the school’s motto, “ Improve Both Mind and Heart ,” Derby provides students with a joyful and rigorous academic environment while infusing values and character development into all we do. The Director of Community and Belonging will oversee the strategic planning and implementation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and service learning initiatives. The Director reports directly to the Head of School, is a member of the Leadership Team, and supports all students, faculty, staff, and families as a community of learners. A successful Director of Community and Belonging will lead DEIB and Service Learning at Derby. As a leader of DEIB, the Director will: Provide visionary leadership in the area of DEIB, utilizing best practices.Oversee implementation of our DEIB strategic plan.Lead faculty professional development to advance DEIB practices.Act as a resource for faculty and staff in providing academic, emotional, and social support for students and families of diverse backgrounds.Collaborate with division heads on culturally appropriate curricula.Coordinate programs for educating the community (faculty, staff, students, families) about DEIB.Support the hiring and retainment of candidates of historically underrepresented backgrounds.Create, organize, and facilitate affinity groups for students, families, and faculty.Support the Admission Office with prospective families as they work to learn more about the Derby community as a potential school.Work with the Communications Office to publicize diversity-related events, educational opportunities, and workshops for students, faculty, and families. Work with the Business Office to review Tuition Assistance policies and act as a liaison for families who receive Tuition Assistance. Act as a liaison with Belonging at Derby, a parent group, to ensure alignment in programming. As the leader of Service Learning, the Director will :Provide strategic leadership in the areas of service learning, utilizing best practices. Develop and maintain relationships with community partners and identify new partnership opportunities.Develop, coordinate, and implement service learning programs and initiatives.Work closely with division heads, faculty, and community partners to integrate service learning into the curriculum.Provide guidance to students so they develop an understanding and appreciation for service.Coordinate logistics for service learning projects, including transportation, supplies, and equipment.Track and report on the impact of service learning programs and initiatives.Develop and deliver professional development opportunities for faculty.Work with the Communications Office to deliver messaging in regard to service learning.Act as a liaison with Derby Serves, a parent service group, to ensure alignment in programming. Qualifications: This position requires an individual with vision, patience, flexibility, energy, enthusiasm, proven people and project management skills, and experience working with faculty, students, and families. Experience in an educational institution and an understanding of mission-driven enterprises are helpful. Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree and two to four years’ experience with service learning and diversity initiatives in schools preferred.The successful candidate for this position will have:Demonstrated leadership experience in DEIB and service learning. A strong foundation in DEIB and service learning, through formal educational programs, professional development, and experience.Leadership experience in community-building efforts.An understanding of student development, ages 4-14.Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), listening, and analytical skills.Strong organizational and project management skills.Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, families, and community partners.Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
