Director, Film and Television ArchiveUniversity of California Los Angeles Requisition Number: 32120 Salary: Salary is commensurate with skills, knowledge, and experience. Position Description: Reporting to the University Librarian, the Director, Film and Television Archive is a key senior administrator in the UCLA Library and has leadership, management, and strategic policy and planning responsibilities for the Film and Television Archive and oversees the activities in all areas of the Archive including collection development, curation, management, digitization, and preservation; content licensing; public programming; services provided in the Archive Research and Study Center; and Archive administration. The Director is responsible for organizational and program planning; budget management; coordination of activities with the UCLA Library and other campus units; directing and evaluating business and academic support functions. Working closely with the University Librarian, the Executive Director of Library Development, and senior management team, the Director develops fundraising strategies, stewards and cultivates donors, and writes proposals to support the goals and activities of the Archive. The Director coordinates the work of the Archive with the rest of the UCLA Library, collaborates with UCLA Library staff, serves as a member of the senior management team, assures compliance with University policies, procedures, and audit standards as well as meeting legal and other relevant agency and organizational requirements. The Director is a lead spokesperson at campus, UC systemwide, state, national, and international levels for issues and policies relating to the development, management, and preservation of film and television archives. The Director ensures that the Archive and the UCLA Library actively participate in collaborative programs and services to collect, manage, and preserve film and television content, is informed of and influences global discussions about best practices in audiovisual content preservation and access, and fulfills the Library's fundamental mission of access to a rich and deep array of materials supporting UCLA's mission and academic priorities for education and research as well as broad public access to film and television content held in the Archive. The UCLA Library is a campus-wide network of libraries serving the full range of teaching and research activities at UCLA. Its collections encompass more than twelve million volumes as well as archives, audiovisual materials, corporate reports, government publications, manuscripts, maps, microforms, oral histories, photographs, technical reports, and other scholarly resources. The Library also provides access to an extensive collection of digital resources including reference works, electronic journals, other full-text titles, and moving and still images. The Film and Television Archive, a division of the UCLA Library, collects, preserves and exhibits film and television materials. It supports both research and instruction in media, entertainment and the arts, the social sciences and many other academic disciplines through its extensive collections of over 27 million feet of newsreels, 95,000 motion picture titles, 120,000 television titles and recordings of over 100,000 news programs. It provides access to materials for scholars and students, educators at all levels and film and television professionals as well as the general public.The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Advanced degree in archival or film studies and preservation or relevant discipline OR equivalent education and experience. Minimum of 10 years of professional experience managing a film and/or television or similar archive. Deep understanding of moving image preservation, standards, and best practices. Successful record of exercising progressively more demanding leadership and management skills and abilities in an archival or similar setting and a minimum of 5 years of successful management and supervisory experience. Demonstrated excellent performance in setting strategic priorities in large, complex organizations. Outstanding management skills, proven planning and organizational skills, ability to motivate staff and work effectively with staff at all levels, and ability to deliver desired results and outcomes. Broad, in-depth knowledge of and proven administrative experience in strategic planning, introducing and managing change, budget planning and allocation, facilities and space planning, and management in complex organizations. Detailed knowledge of business policy and practice related to budgeting, accounting, purchasing, cash handling, auditing, personnel and payroll, contract and grant functions as they relate to fiscal management. Ability to interpret general and subsidiary ledgers and other financial reports. Demonstrated experience in budget projection, forecasting, and developing financial status reports. Capability to analyze complex fiscal or technical data. A thorough and up-to-date understanding of digital file formats, electronic records management, and digital persistence practice and theory. Strong command of archival theory and best practices, especially as they relate to the particular issues posed by born-digital content. Familiarity with trends in arrangement, description, and management of born-digital materials. Familiarity with metadata standards relevant to the archival control of digital collection materials such as EAD, Dublin Core, METS, MODS, and PREMIS. Knowledge of copyright, donor restriction, and permissions issues related to processing digitized and born-digital material. Successful, sustained experience fundraising and working with donors and funders. Commitment to providing excellent services for faculty, students, and staff and a deep understanding of the research and instructional needs of faculty and students. Proficiency and understanding of technology and how its use is evolving in film and television archives. Extensive experience supervising and managing staff including coaching, motivating, and mentoring of staff and supervisors. Demonstrated skill in overseeing staff performing varied and complex duties including organizing workflow to accomplish established objectives, delegating responsibility, and training. Demonstrated leadership ability, analytical skills, creative and innovative problem-solving skills, and a strong commitment to service excellence. Outstanding written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, superior organizational ability, initiative, and an entrepreneurial approach. Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork within the organization. Capacity to thrive in a rapidly changing environment and to foster that capacity in others. Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in higher education and archives. Ability to view issues from a wide perspective and openness to organizational change. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, donors, funders, and students in a complex and rapidly changing environment and to work within a team environment and to promote teamwork.
