About the Thomas Jefferson Foundation The Thomas Jefferson Foundation has a twofold mission of preservation and education, and was incorporated in 1923 to preserve Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Today, the Foundation seeks to bring history forward into national and global dialogues by engaging audiences with Jefferson's world and ideas, and sharing the history of everyone, enslaved and free, who lived and labored at Monticello. Monticello is recognized as a National Historic Landmark, a United Nations World Heritage Site and a Site of Conscience. Digital Hybrid Guide (Full-time, one-year position) Purpose: To bring history forward by connecting Monticello's past - with an emphasis on Thomas Jefferson as a nation builder, Monticello as a plantation powered by the labor of enslaved families, and the site's architecture and material culture - to modern audiences through digital and non-digital interpretive means. We will look to you to: Provide excellent customer service and seamless online guest experience. Respond to audiences by varying tour content and technique to meet differing levels of familiarity and interests. Develop and conduct digital and live interpretive products, interactive talks, and indoor and outdoor tours for the public. Digital products include, but not limited to, electronic field trips, live virtual tours, research and production of livestream broadcasts, research and writing of content for the web, videos, podcasts. and social media. Non-digital interpretive products include guided tours of the house, gardens, and outdoor areas of the Monticello plantation. Content for these products include conversations about or information on the founding of the United States, the principles of the Declaration of Independence and its legacies, slavery in the United States and its legacies, Jefferson's families with Martha Jefferson and Sally Hemings, history of the landscape and gardens, and the architecture and material culture of the site. Skills & Abilities Excellent speaking skills, especially the ability of succinct expression. Excellent interpersonal skills-must be able to demonstrate empathy for each guest, whether online or in person, and help them feel that Monticello's history connects to their life. Ability to perceive and express the complexity of Monticello's history. Skilled at working with children of all ages and varying backgrounds and managing students in group situations Advanced knowledge of digital meeting and webinar platforms. The successful candidate must have two years of college or equivalent experience in either interpreting a historic site or public speaking and historical research. The ability to lift wheelchairs, brochure boxes, strollers, etc. (up to 40 lbs) is necessary. Some weekend and holiday work are required.
