Background: Kent, Campa and Kate Incorporated (KCK) is a federal contracting company that provides professional services to Government Agencies. We are currently seeking candidates for a Deputy Course Chair/Course Coordinator (AS) position in Arlington, VA supporting the Foreign Service Institute (FSI). Position Summary: The candidate will be located in the Area Studies Division at the Foreign Service Institute. As the primary training provider for the Department of State and the USG foreign affairs community, FSI prepares USG foreign affairs professionals to conduct U.S. diplomacy. The Area Studies Division provides unbiased cultural and historical context to understand the people, society, and contemporary issues within a given region or country.The Area Studies South and Central Asia Affairs (SCA) Deputy Chair position is interdisciplinary and requires the application of expert-level professional knowledge in one or more fields in the social sciences with special expertise relating to a specific region or area of the world, in this case South and Central Asia. Under the guidance of the SCA Chair and Area Studies leadership, the incumbent serves as the coordinator and trainer of a regional area studies program with responsibility for specified regional, country-specific, and thematic training and guidance for the Department of State. As a professional academic or an expert foreign affairs practitioner, the incumbent ensures that all area studies training and guidance meet the needs of Department of State personnel and the larger foreign affairs community.Primary responsibilities in these programs include teaching several major courses at the graduate level; curriculum and course design; counseling students at FSI and officials in the Department; advising other staff at FSI; and evaluation of training results. The incumbent not only carries a heavy teaching, counseling, and administrative load, but must also keep constantly informed of developments in the relevant fields so that the latest academic knowledge, policy positions, and relevant analyses are made available to students and to officials in the Department of State on a consultative basis. Required Qualifications: This position requires professional and expert-level knowledge which is pertinent to several disciplines in various fields of the social sciences and applied to at least one particular region of the world. Professional education and experience in any or a combination of the following disciplines can provide the base knowledge required to perform the work: Foreign Affairs; International Relations; History; Anthropology; Sociology; and related social science disciplines. A completed PhD is preferred but a graduate degree is also acceptable. Education: Completed PhD (preferred) OR a Master's degree with five (5) years' experience in a relevant field. A secret clearance is preferred, but not required to start; Candidate must be able to obtain a secret clearance. Knowledge and skills in the development of curricula and courses. Advanced skills in adult education, ideally involving the subject matter for which the position is responsible. Knowledge and skills in training evaluation sufficient to be able to evaluate the results of the courses for which the position is responsible. Advanced knowledge of the mission and functions of the Department of State, and particularly the relevant regional bureau, as well as other foreign affairs agencies to provide courses in the context of work situations of the students for whom the courses are intended. Knowledge of and the ability to carry out management and administrative functions as required in connection with the courses for which the position is responsible. Familiarity with and the ability to use computer and related technologies and excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to carry out and/or facilitate the accomplishment of numerous functional responsibilities of the position. Commitment to collective and collaborative work environment. Program management experience. Duties and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to): Assist program Chair in planning long and short-range curriculum for a regional program. Teach several stand-alone and language-integrated courses throughout the year within areas of expertise. Identify speakers for courses. Identify pedagogical materials and resources for the program and keep records of all course materials. Maintain regional expertise. Develop curricula for all courses within the program and assist Course Coordinators with curricula development. Continuously research to keep materials and course content updated and cutting edge. Continuously develop and maintain professional contacts who will be resources for the courses. Serve as FSI's expert on the region. Maintain and develop professional contacts with other government agencies and provide training and consultation to those agencies in accordance with FSI policies. Develop and maintain course evaluation instruments according to FSI policy. Analyze evaluation data. In coordination with program Chair and Area Studies leadership, support and conduct needs assessments and utilize evaluation data to design offerings in the regional program. Serve as a liaison to the School of Language Studies (SLS) in coordinating language-integrated courses. Coordinate registration issues of students for all SCA courses.
