Communications Repair Technician

Position will be open until filled. GENERAL PURPOSE: The general purpose is to provide support, maintenance and troubleshooting of the City land mobile radio system. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Installs, removes, repairs, maintains, programs and inventories a variety of radio communications equipment and systems, including but not limited to, 2-way radio communications equipment (trunked radio systems, conventional radio systems, mobile radios, base radios, portables, mobile data, control/dispatch consoles, analog and digital radios, frequency/time division multiplexing, antennas, dishes, and towers). Coordinates activities to schedule system outages, perform systems tests, analyze equipment performance problems, and implement repairs as needed. Test, tune, and align duplexers, repeaters, portable radios and mobile radios. Set up, configure, and use service and test instrumentation to perform communication tests and maintenance. Estimates time and materials and/or obtains quotes required for proposed jobs; maintains records and submits various reports and requisitions for supplies and equipment. Responds to off-duty emergencies to effect repairs of malfunctioning electronic and communication systems. Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; also on call status on nights and weekends. Perform other duties as assigned. Regular and timely attendance is required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in electronics, electrical engineering technology, computer technology, or a closely related field is desirable. Military technical school training in communications or telecommunications, or training received in equipment vendor service schools may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. 3 years of relevant experience. Required Licenses or Certifications: A valid Texas driver license with a good driving record is required. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide and original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Ability to pass a background investigation as it pertains to civil and criminal background. Technical certification of FCC General Class License or APCO Technician Certificate desirable. Required Knowledge of: Understanding of electronics and RF principles. Familiarity of FCC processes and procedures including but not limited to applications, renewals, and modifications. RF test tools such as transmission test sets, signal generators, spectrum analyzers. Frequency utilization, base stations, repeaters, multi-couplers, duplexers, radio code plug template development, radio programming. Antenna and wiring installation, mounting brackets and hardware for PC and mobile radio equipment inside of vehicles. Knowledge of network topologies desired. Point to point and point to multi-point wireless IP bridges, cellular modems, and various other network equipment. Basic LAN/WAN computer networking (e.g., switching, routing, Wi-Fi, bridges). Basic PC and other computerized hardware troubleshooting and maintenance. Basic PC operation and Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel). Required Skill in: Establish and maintain cooperative relations with other employees and agencies. Ability to analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action. Able to communicate effectively. Preparation of clear and concise reports. Performance of duties in a courteous and considerate manner even in difficult circumstances. Able to accomplish assigned course of action. Physical Demands / Work Environment: Safely and effectively use all tools assigned or required in the performance of duties. Exert considerable physical effort in walking, climbing on buildings or other elevated structures and in/out of vehicles. Working in great temperature extremes. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
