Operation Fuel seeks a dynamic communicator to fill the climate and health internship role. The candidate should be skilled in various aspects of community outreach, building relationships, and gathering qualitative data to support the mission at Operation Fuel. This is a full-time, summer internship that reports to the communications and program manager. Travel within the state and reporting to the Hartford office is required, as needed. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY: This important position provides support and assistance for the communications and marketing team on the Climate Smart Technology project, which seeks to understand the investment needed to provide back-up power (e.g., solar power, battery storage) and stable indoor temperature (e.g., efficient heating and cooling, weatherization) in affordable housing to increase the resilience of tenants that are dependent on home medical devices for their health. The intern will be building on existing project work and establish additional methods for engagement with property owners/managers and residents that are using home medical devices. The intern will conduct focus groups and informational interviews within this population. Essential functions Complete required certification to conduct human subject research. Review existing project guide and IRB protocol, focus group guide (discussion questions), and consent form. Collaborate with communications team to revise outreach materials and methods as needed to complete recruitment. Engage community partners in outreach on behalf of the project team. Screen residents for enrollment into the research project In collaboration with the communications team, facilitate focus groups, in person or virtually, with a goal to conduct approximately 3-5 focus groups and additional informational interviews. Communicate with the larger project team and Yale researcher(s) Summarize the internship with a report and/or presentation to the staff Other Support with special projects across the organization Staff outreach and fundraising events Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES High school diploma or equivalent, required. College coursework or equivalent professional experience preferred. The ability to travel independently around the state is required. Curiosity and interest in adaptation and mitigation to achieve energy resilience is required. Ability to independently complete research project training required. Experience with conducting IRB protocols or conducting research with human subjects, preferred. Interview/qualitative data collection experience, preferred. Individual or group interviewing preferred. Familiarity with mapping tools. Knowledge of and the ability to independently use Microsoft 365 platform and apps, including Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and others as needed. Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to engage with diverse populations with professionalism and sensitivity. Commitment to cultural competence; previous experience with economically disadvantaged populations preferred. Detail oriented with a commitment to accuracy. Ability to perform the job with integrity, mission, vision, and values consistent with Operation Fuel. Bi-lingual a plus. Ability to follow all CDC and Operation Fuel office guidelines for the prevention of COVID-19. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described in this position description are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to perform continuous bending, twisting, stooping, reaching and lifting of moderate to heavy weight material up to 20 lbs. Must be highly mobile, able to access all areas of the premises. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Must be able to walk, sit and stand for extended periods during the shift.
