At the Department of Public Works we manage 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our District Highway Operations and Bridge Crew are essential to ensuring the safety of various bridges in the province. About Our Opportunity Reporting to the District Bridge Engineer, the Bridge Inspector is part of a team responsible for managing the bridges in the District. The Bridge Inspector is responsible for the regular inspection of the bridges and the completion of inspection reports, which includes detailed information on deficiencies and recommended repair options. Primary Accountabilities The Bridge Inspector assists with the preparation of tenders, environmental applications, and inspects the work of Contractors and Department personnel undertaking bridge repairs. The Bridge Inspector also maintains the Department's bridge inventory and inspection databases. The Bridge Inspector provides guidance and instruction to the Assistant Bridge Inspector as well as training to employees related to bridge inspection and repairs. May also be responsible for surveying bridge sites and drafting plans and other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Experience High School completion plus completion of a related trade or technical training in the area of specialty (Civil Engineering Technology or Survey Technology) and 6 years of related experience after course completion; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable. Must be able to understand and accurately describe bridge components, document their condition, recognize types of deterioration/damage, and determine the causes in order to recommend repair options. .
