Position Description Job Summary What's the job? The Automation & Controls Engineer develops and implements automated solutions for plant operations, quality, and maintenance. They manage medium to high-complexity projects, ensuring safety for employees and contractors. As the plant's expert in robotics, PLCs, sensors, and more, they oversee design, integration, and implementation. Proficient in PLC programming (Allen Bradley), they diagnose and fix malfunctioning systems, collaborating daily with the operations team to prevent recurring issues. Adheres to safety regulations and reports to the Engineering Manager. Design, develop, and implement process control systems, coordinate World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects to enhance plant profitability, assist with computer control system programming, and manage operational data for plant management. Collaborate with consultants and suppliers to ensure compatibility with WCM and Controls. Maintains records of plant and individual equipment performance. Prepares data sheets, diagrams, and flow charts needed for the correct and efficient operation of the plant equipment. Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and work instructions. Analyzes operating problems, develops solutions, and leads with implementation of corrective action. Receives collects, interprets, and concludes data from the production process to monitor current performances against established baselines. Review relevant production data to accurately interpret and identify the various opportunities at the production level and to immediately take steps to improve efficiency. Ensure reliability of production systems through planned activities at minimal costs. Improve and maintain production uptime. Expected to participate in problem-solving sessions and be a key resource for improvement. Encourage and lead the department's activities for continuous improvement. Maintain electrical equipment to meet regulatory codes at the state and federal levels. Troubleshoot and diagnose issues within the roofing shingle manufacturing line, particularly focusing on automated processes controlled by Siemens and Allen Bradley drives, digital and analog measuring devices, Allen Bradley PLCs, temperature controllers, encoders and pulse counters, high and low voltage control systems, and other applicable manufacturing equipment. Uses advanced PLC / Controls tools to reduce process variations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including maintenance technicians, production operators, and manufacturing engineers to address control system-related challenges effectively. Analyze production data and feedback from operators to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency, quality, and safety within the manufacturing line. Provide technical support and guidance to maintenance personnel during troubleshooting activities, ensuring issues are resolved promptly and accurately. Stay updated with advancements in automation technology, particularly in Siemens and Allen Bradley platforms, and propose innovative solutions to optimize control system performance. Document troubleshooting procedures, equipment modifications, and maintenance activities to maintain comprehensive records and facilitate knowledge transfer. Participate in training programs for operators and maintenance staff to enhance their understanding of control systems and promote best practices in system operation and maintenance. Report all EH&S incidents - Injuries/Recordables, Near Misses, First Aid, Environmental and Property/Equipment Damage. Conduct weekly SMAT Audits or any other requirements as requested by the Manager. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications What do you bring? Four-year technical degree preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved. 5 or more years of progressive designing and commissioning control systems in a manufacturing environment Proven PLC programming (Allen Bradley). Must have the ability to read electrical schematics, and understand relay logic, drive systems, ladder logic, etc... Experienced in using megohmmeters, multimeters, and additional electrical diagnostic equipment. Experienced in calibrating instrumentation devices such as temp. controls, level controls, photohelic gauges, etc. Project management experience Strong working knowledge of product structure, manufacturing processes as well as quality standards and modern manufacturing technologies and techniques, TPM. (Autonomous maintenance, professional maintenance, and early equipment management), quality and process control including Statistical Process Control (SPC), 5S, standardized work, and other Lean principles. Additional Description Strong written and oral communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent organization and analytical skills. Strong change management skills to include the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles and concepts. Ability to organize and plan the use of time and people effectively and efficiently. Ability to function, multi-task, and influence others in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Exceptional communication skills (both verbal and written), problem-solving and analytical skills. Problem-solving and analytical skills to solve practical issues and deal with a variety of changing situations. Be reachable and available for after-hours support in emergency downtime situations.
